6MT Sedan: TS Ecu Gains Finally!!! 305HP!

Today I went to Technosquare to have my 2003.5 6MT Sedan redynod. For those of you who dont know, my previous dyno to compare the Stock Program vs. the TS Upgrade Program yielded no gains. At that time, the car was stock. It was theorized at that time that with a freer flowing exhaust, the gains would be realized. Thus, I waited 6 months for the development of the Stillen True Dual, which has been installed and also Kinetix High Flow cats. The result:
The after dyno showed an increase in HP of at least 10 hp. The reason I say at least is becuase my HP increase actually went to 20 hp at one point, but it may be due to the fact that the intake was repositioned to recieve more cold air after the 3rd dyno. Power kept going up with each dyno. did quite a few runs.
A few confounds though: I also have installed the Z-tube and JWT popcharger, which Tadashi believes is inferior to the Stock Intake box as there is no pressure zone and also, the JWT still seems to be sucking in hot air. (I am considering taking his advice and selling my popcharger and reinstalling the stock box with a K&N filter). Also on my car is a grounding kit. I personally dont believe these are signifigant confounds, but for those meticulious ones out there, take it as you will.

As for the amount of power my car is now putting down:
The stock program showed that I had about 240 hp at the wheels.
After the ECU swap, the first run showed about 250 at the wheels.
The next run showed 255 at the wheels.
And after repositioning the JWT to actually suck cool air, I was having 259 almost 260 RWHP.
calculating an 18 percent drivetrain loss, that means my car can achieve about 305 HP at the crank. WHOOOHOOO. i am very pleased!
*the dyno used was the old, but accurate BOSCH dyno.

Hmm.. I haven't heard that the pop-charger/z tube combination resulting in a loss of power. I'm curious how accurate JWT's dyno run was.

well, if the temperature is cool, gains will probably be shown. After driving around for awhile, it gets pretty darn hot in the engine bay. From my place to TechnoSquare is about 45 minutes. The car cooled for about an hour, but before the dyno, when we touched the intake, it was undoubtably hot. and sucking hot air. Perhaps if the car was moving, cool air might be coming in. The thing that Tadashi told me, was that with the stock box, the design allows for a pressure zone withing the box so that cool air actually gets SUCKED into the intake, rather than just nonchalantly going in as is the case with the popcharger and other intakes.
Drive around a bit with your popcharger, and then feel the intake, it gets pretty damn hot. and truth be told, Nissan did an awesome job designing the G35...including the intake box.

Interesting, I live in Texas where it gets very hot. I have driven around for an hour in 90 degree weather and my popcharger is cool to the touch immediately afterwards. I have the TS ECU as well.

Those are *very* impressive at-the-wheels numbers for the sedan! Congrats!

Nutty, great post and great news! Congrats...wanna race?! =) No really though. You should come up with us to LACR on May 5th and show those ppl there how a sedan is supposed to run! If you're interested, go to the West Forum and sign up in the LACR MAY 5th thread posted by KWAKMAN.

Can we see the dyno graphs from the pulls? I want to see where the power is made.

The thing to remember about reaching into the engine bay and checking the temp of various intake parts is this. The amount of time the air actually spends inside the system is very short, it will have a hard time picking up heat that way. But, if it's sucking in warmer air, that's another story. One can plug in and get the intake temps off the MAF sensor.

Patrick,

Nice numbers. One question, your stock program is showing around 240 at the wheels, which is a little high. The dynos that I have seen for stock G MT's are in the 220-225 rwhp. Which dyno did you use?

EDIT: Your gains are very nice - it seems you gained about 20 hp from JWT/Ztube/ECU/Cats/Stillen catback, assuming you had 240 with a bone stock car. Am I right? The absolute numbers cannot be compare b/w dyno machines as you know. But the relative numbers sure can. Did you use the Bosch dyno or a DynoJet.

hey gurgen,
actually, 240 is not bone stock. that is with the intake, exhaust, and cats. I believe it should be closer to 250, but it was a damn hot day yesterday. 100 + degree weather and the car was hot.

my bone stock dyno done at K&N showed me at 230.

we werent comparing bone stock to all mods. we were comparing stock ECU program to TS ECU program. hope that clears things up.

Hey Nutty,
Was the dyno used at K&N also a Bosch?

"it may be due to the fact that the intake was repositioned to recieve more cold air after the 3rd dyno."

How did you reposition the intake to recieve more cold air? This was done with the JWT pop charger and z tube, correct?

In regard to the comment about going back to the stock air box......was it recommended to still keep the z tube?

"100 + degree weather "

Nutty,
Nice numbers. FYI, on a 100 degree Farenheit day at 500 above sea level, at 29.92 inches, with 45% humidity you were only 97% of HP as compared to a standard day (sea level, 15 C, 29.92 inches).

Holding everything else constant, at 80 degrees F, you'd be at 98.9% Relative HP to Rated.

Re: 6MT Sedan: TS Ecu Gains Finally!!! 305HP!

to reposition, they actually turned the z-tube and jwt and put it on top of a board that was placed over the front part of my engine bay.

the z-tube is definitely an improvement. Danny from TS has told me that the stillen box would also be an improvement...but dynos have shown it to lose power right? dont remmeber, ooolllllddd threads. i have personally always liked the stillen air box design. might consider getting one.

Re: 6MT Sedan: TS Ecu Gains Finally!!! 305HP!

Just an idea, but can the Stillen air box be used to "cover" the popcharger (thus eliminating the potential for heat soak)?

Just an idea for those that are worried about the potential loss of power from the pop-charger.
