Idle knock? Dealer says the sound is normal...
I've been hearing this sound for the past couple months since I bought the car.. I noticed it when I pull in my driveway and get out of the car to open the garage door at night when its quiet. My engine makes a constant "tick..tick..tick..tick" but it doesnt sound like lifters because its slow and pretty loud. My friend thinks its a rod knock.. The sound got louder and more noticeable when I switched my oil to Mobil1 Synthetic 5w30. What should I do? I asked my dealer to check out my engine when I had my headlight recall done and they said the sound was normal, but I've never heard this on another G35 or 350z
edit: I've been checking my oil frequently and there doesnt seem to be a consumption issue, the level never dropped in my first 3000 miles of ownership
Thanks,
-Mark

Its an '06, so you still have warranty right? Normally if it's a warranty issue the dealer will go ahead do the work (they get paid by Nissan, you get a new engine, everyone wins... except headquarters). The car may have a problem, but it's not the point yet where the engine needs to be replaced. Try a second opinion, go to another dealer and see what they say. Maybe even go by a Nissan dealer and "test drive" a 350Z, or tell them outright what issue you have and just want to hear a 350Z's idle/rev.
Sounds suck to try and troubleshoot over the internet, I can also tell you these engine have a little tick them as it is... so depending on how bad it is it will be hard to narrow it down... You can try refilling at a different station with some 93 octane if you have that in your area...

Run your gas as low as you dare, and try using another brand of fuel. Sometimes that's the culprit, even though it sounds odd. Maybe your favorite gas station has dirty filters.
Otherwise, get a second opinion.

if your car is audibly knocking then switching gas will not do anything. If what your hearing at idle is knock, then the only thing that will help is a engine rebuild (as long as we are talking about a car on stock ecu)

$20 it's the fuel injectors. They're noisy and always have been on the VQ motors. Take a long screwdriver and stick the metal end on a fuel injector cap. Take the handle and place up against your ear. Listen to each injector. Another thing it could be is a fuel injector regulator rattling in it's mount. There's a TSB for this.
