I searched.. but I need an explanation - OIL types

Okay, I need help in :
1) Understanding the numbers on the oil..
2) Understanding correlation of those numbers and temperature
3) Someone to tell me what exact oil is the best oil for me to use. I'm not looking for the brand, looking for number.

I just did the oil change, and the Autozone guys said that I needed 5w-30.. is that correct?
what does the 5w30 mean? what is 5 and what is 30? what is W?
Should I be switching to a different viscosity oil for the winter - I am located in IL, winter can drop to like 0 or bit lower.
thank you in advance.

5W30 should be fine for the winter.

5 is the viscosity cold, 30 is warm.

thanks

Mike,

I also wanted to thank you. Did my first 1000 oil change, and brought in M1 5w30. Woke up in a cold sweat this morning (3am) thinking it wasn't the right type for the IL winter. You just gave me a license to sleep!
