larger oil filter alternative

I know this may have been covered, but just in case it hasn't.

My curiousity got going this weekend and I looked into an OEM sourced oil filter alternative for the G35 instead of using the OEM sized version because its just soo damn small. This was convienent because I had to change my oil anyhow.

I don't use OEM Nissan filters so I'm not sure how this compares, but I tend to use high quality filters from Wix or Purolator.

I sourced the Wix oil filter from their fitment for the 2005+ 4.0 V6 Nissan Frontier because its bigger than their filter for the G35/350Z. I had ZERO fitment issues with this as well.

Here are some part numbers and some pictures for those who care:

Wix 350Z/G35 51365 Height is 2.577 OD is 2.685
Wix 4.0 Frontier 51356 Height is 3.402 OD is 2.685 (pictured)
Purolator 350Z/G35 PL14612 Height is 2.93 OD is 2.69 (pictured)
Purolator Frontier PL14610 Height is 3.52 OD is 2.69

Thanks, I'm definitely going to switch to the Wix 51356. I assume no clearance problems?

yes, that’s what I normally use... or Purolator Pure One (they call it something else now I think)... I’ve been using the Napa/Wix the last few times.

My wife's '08 Acura TL uses the larger Pure One PL14610. The guys at Bob the oil guy said that this larger oil filter is the one to use for the G as a upgrade over the smaller Pure One PL14612. I will be now be purchasing just the larger filter.

Looking at the mobile-1 filter numbers and such in a book was initially what led me to look into this. I was going to buy the mobile-1 filter for the G, but they were out of stock, so out of curiosity I looked at some of the other VQ engined cars in the book to see if there were any different numbers listed. I saw that the number for the frontier was close and was in stock but I didnt want to buy a filter and have it not work. So i went home and looked up everything else and the original post is what I found.

I dont always go to the same store when I buy my oil and filters so I will more than likely switch from time to time between the Purolater Pure1 and the Wix filters. There's only one store in my area that carries both the oil im using and the filter i prefer to use and thats pep-boys. Its just not always in my path and sometime i hate paying their price for oil.

Im glad some of you found this useful, im positive their are some bigger filters out there, but the ones I posted should be easier to find on the shelf compared to others and these at least do not cause any clearance issues.

Nope. I've been using this one for some time. I'm ready to buy more.

I ordered the 51356 maxima version as it's slightly longer. Price is only $4.31 each. Shipping for 6 was about $11. No tax. So cost was actually about $6.10 each. If you go to Napa's store, they are $7.10 each + tax. If you order more than 6, of course the price per each would go down.

Napa's gold line is made by Wix, which is a highly respected and proven filter maker. I think this is a great alternative to the $10-$11 Mobil 1 filters/K&N filters I see you guys using.

Also Walmart has Mobil 1 5W30 for $23.xx per 5qt container. Pretty good price vs the $5.xx-$6 per qt prices I see elsewhere. I like the 5qt containers too.
