Wrong. Overfilling is just as bad, if not worse, than underfilling. As long as you monitor oil levels and change frequently, you can often run less than the recommended amount in your engine. Overfilling leads to bad, bad things.

So you think even 150ml of overfill can ruin an engine?

Ugh. Overfilling with way too much is damaging. Nothing to do with pressure. But if you have so much oil that the crank is touching the oil in the pan, it will froth up (like soap lather) and cause the oil pump to cavitate. Or it will make the oil pump push frothy oil though the engine. THAT is bad. 1/2 qt overfill won't do this.

The space between L & H marks (24mm) represents 1 quart of oil. Thus, 5 1/2 quarts will leave you on the H mark. It has for me on all my previous oil fills.
In between is perfect. You don't want to be low, but you don't want to be over either. I actually prefer keeping the oil filled just above the low mark. And no, the dipstick is not accurate.

That much probably won't make a difference. I'd rather encourage people to err on the side of filling a little low, rather than over-filling. Granted, I also change my oil more frequently than most, and try not to neglect maintenance (tire pressure, oil levels, etc.). My comment was merely to address the common misconception that "a little more oil won't hurt......"

Fill up with 5 quarts with a new filter, let the car sit, and note where the oil mark is on YOUR dipstick, relative to the 5 quarts. Then use this as a reference for future checks. Do NOT use the dipstick's markings as a measure of how much oil is in the pan.

agree with slider...unscrewing the oil filer would probably drump 1/4 quart of oil... but i always put in 5.5 quarts initially with new filter and put in another 1/4 quart at 4-5K for a 8K oil change interval. I use German Castrol 0W-30. I know this is hard to get. My other choice would be Rotella 5W-40.

Cool

Easy to lose 1/2 qt rep[lace filter. I use the filter for the Titan truck. Same base and threaded fitting and has a greater capicity. I just don't trust the dinky little filter for the G35.

Hmmm...I was under the impression that with an FI car that a little extra oil was needed to fill the additional oil lines. And I mean, adding that extra oil was needed to get the oil to the correct spot on the dipstick. Right?

We weren't discussing FI cars, but yes, that would be correct. Anytime you change the total capacity of the oil system (oil cooler swap, different capacity oil pan, etc.), you will need to make some sort of an adjustment. The factory manual assumes that you have not changed your engine's oil capacity.

G35X sedan

Yes you are right! Sorry to bring up an old thread but I have an 05 G35X Sedan. I've had it for almost 10 years now and bought it with 110k miles on it. It now has 240k miles. I bought the car with a very low oil reading and then changed it a day later and figured this out. My G has burned about a quart of oil every 750 miles since I bought it. But hasn't consumed anymore since I started doing the oil changes myself since day one. The dipstick on our cars tells the truth and is never inaccurate for me. Only check oil in the morning before cold startups. It never lies!
