Engine/Cabin Noise
Engine/Cabin Noise
I've got a strange issue that came up a few days ago. While sitting in the cabin at a stop with the car idling I noticed a strange noise coming from what seems like the engine bay. Its almost like a quiet motorcycle idling (like a pop/burble at a high rate). It's really only audible when the car is idling as any amount of throttle overpowers the noise with the engine tone. If I open the hood I can't hear it either but this may be because of all the other engine sounds. But it is certainly very audible in the cabin at idle and is extremely annoying. It only happens when the car is nice and hot, there is no noise during a cold start. I got home from work yesterday, heard the noise loud and clear, turned the car off to run upstairs so I can have my mother listen to it as she'll be taking the car into the shop for me, came back down two minutes later to start the car and the noise was gone. I then drove the car for about ten minutes to drop my girlfriend off and there it is again. If I put my hand on the shifter at idle I can feel a slight vibration that is in tune with the noise. I still have a few more months on my power train warranty and would like to get this fixed if it an engine/tranny issue. The car is going to an automotive shop while I'm at work to see if they can figure it out. Any ideas? Could it be an exhaust leak?
My mother took the car to a shop and I spoke to the mechanic over the phone and he said that there is an exhaust leak in the intermediary pipe near the flex section. That sure sounds like my coupe mid pipe which had some rust on it when I received it.
Would I be able to remove the coupe resonator and have an exhaust shop form a new mid pipe using the coupe resonator? I'm not looking forward to hunting down another coupe mid pipe or having to install my stock sedan one temporarily only to have it removed.

An HR Y-Pipe is in the plans as soon as I can locate one for a good price. I'm going to my exhaust shop tomorrow morning to have them fabricate a new mid pipe using the coupe resonator for me.
So all of the exhaust fiddling did not fix this noise (there was an unrelated exhaust leak though). I went to the dealer to describe the issue and they knew off the bat that it was the fuel dampener. They had a car the day prior that experienced the same issue. Now that the dampener has been replaced, the noise is gone.

Way to go on being a complete douche. I have an informative thread that can save someone a lot of time in the future. I don't believe I can say any of that about your threads. Your threads are great if I'm looking for a good laugh at your expense though. Thanks buddy.
im just here to help...your welcome...russian
Hey guys, I was about to purchase a G35 coupe 6mt and when I went to test drive it, it exhibited the EXACT same noise. I made a post over at 6mt.net and decided to search on here as well. THANKS! It's an 2003 so I hope that I can get this fixed under the warranty before I purchase. I described it as sounding like a little 2-stroke motor cycle or boat motor.
