Dangerous JWT Pop-Charger
Re: Dangerous JWT Pop-Charger
...but used it incorrectly. D-
Yes, there is a difference between "facetious" and "sarcastic", albeit a slight one.
Facetious humor is that which is based more on a "clumsy attitute" and is often inappropriate to the situation in which it is used.
Sarcastic humor is actually that which is satirical, and has a deprecating or "insulting" base. Its etymological background reflects this as well, as a sarcastic remark literally "tears at someone's flesh".
Now, in today's society they've unfortunately grown to mean almost identical things, mainly because of a slew of 6th grade teachers trying to make kids sound more intelligent by using bigger words (even if incorrectly). If you investigate literature or dictionaries from the earlier half of the 1900s, you'll find them used and defined as intended. If you now check dictionary.com, etc. you'll find both words to have ambiguous definitions that could easily be interpreted as the same meaning. The quest for brevity and quick-fix grammar has created a mountain of incorrect spellings and mal-reported definitions to now be listed in our references. I, for one, don't really think that we should slowly move towards grammatical entropy, even if it makes people feel empowered.
...and now you know.

Re: Dangerous JWT Pop-Charger
Geo: Can you define "douche", (not in the literal sense) for us. I won't comment on who it is directed toward. *smirks*
Oh yeah, and my car apparently won't last 1.25 million miles because I have a pop-charger. I should really take this thing off !

Re: Dangerous JWT Pop-Charger
Sure, I think the latest I heard, it was:
Douche: n. One who attempts to educate those that are content being wrapped in their warm blankets of ignorance, earning their sarcastic wrath.
Either that, or: One who takes 9 hours to install a pop charger (kidding)
Now go to bed- don't you have to be up by like 1pm tomorrow?

Re: Dangerous JWT Pop-Charger
LOL,
Yes there are some interesting language travesties...here's my top 10:
1) Facetious used to mean sarcastic.
2) Pronouncing Mute when they mean Moot, or the use of Moot when they mean Irrelevant.
and the pronunciations....
3) Supposably. There is no b in Supposedly.
4) Newkular. Thank you George W. for all the material you're giving comedians. This will help me feel better about wasting my vote on a Libertarian.
5) Ending every sentence with an "errr" or "so". When people do this to me I stare at them and wait for them to finish. Makes for interesting interactions with waiters. "Would you like a Queso, errrrrr?".................."Errrrr what?, and why are you asking me if I'd like "a cheese"?" "Sure Billy, how about a nice Brie?"
"Well your Queso is almost ready, so....." ..........."So what? Finish your sentence please!".
6) Replacing "th" with an "f". (Truef)
7) Omitting the "l" in every word "Schoooo Chirdren" "Jelly Ro"
8) Replacing "d" with a "t". (Memphis Retbirts).
9) "Let me axe you a question? Are you fin to get some Queso?"
10) "For all intensive purposes" LOL, I love that one.

GeoBau,
Put away the Oxford English Dictionary will ya. These are serious times with the pop charger destroying engines and all.

This has got to be one of the all-time greatest threads. I started reading this from the beginning, by the end I was LMAO. By the way, I think 'Kelven' mispelled his name.

Let me add "Acrosst" to that list of hated language problems.
Oh, and facetious didn't used to mean sarcastic-- they just do now. They used to be quite different.

Re: Dangerous JWT Pop-Charger
It's too bad this thread will end before it's time. I would love to participate in the inappropriate dynamics of language used by most individuals. However, some may find it trite and uninteresting.

Re: Dangerous JWT Pop-Charger
My favorite Jerry Springer word is "irregardless"
ir·re·gard·less ( P ) Pronunciation Key (r-gärdls)
adv. Nonstandard
Regardless.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Probably blend of irrespective, and regardless.]
Usage Note: Irregardless is a word that many mistakenly believe to be correct usage in formal style, when in fact it is used chiefly in nonstandard speech or casual writing. Coined in the United States in the early 20th century, it has met with a blizzard of condemnation for being an improper yoking of irrespective and regardless and for the logical absurdity of combining the negative ir- prefix and -less suffix in a single term. Although one might reasonably argue that it is no different from words with redundant affixes like debone and unravel, it has been considered a blunder for decades and will probably continue to be so.

Re: Dangerous JWT Pop-Charger
THAT's the word I was trying to think of today! I heard it four of five times a couple days ago, and I wanted to rip my hair out every time! Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting it.

The question I've always had is, why do flammable and inflammable mean the same thing???
I mean, you know, irregardless of the fact of the matter (sic) is that the prefix "in" is used to mean "not" or "non-"?
[Huh? Was I even speaking English? Waasup wi tat?]
