Re: CAI engine water damage

My thought is, if you can see the filter from the front, so can the rain.

In most G applications, the filters looks pretty well protected.

Re: CAI engine water damage

This is fast becoming an urban legend. I have the Injen CAI and I have driven in some VERY heavy rain here in NorCal on the highway and I have never had a problem. Lots of people say you have to put on a bypass valve but no one can seem to find anyone that has actually hydro-locked their car because of water in the CAI. There was someone that hydro-locked his car on this forum but he didn't have a CAI from what I remember. If you are that paranoid about it add a bypass valve, but I will continue to use my CAI without one.

I'm not too worried but I just wanted to see because everyone is saying that it will happen but it hasn't happened to anybody, which I just thought was weird

I agree with skeleton_cru.
I have a Nismo CAI with a Bypass (just in case), but I don't see what the big deal about the filter getting wet from the rain

Re: CAI engine water damage

I fly a piston single engine airplane with an air filter right in front, in plain view of water. Although I've never flown it underwater, I can attest that it still runs when flying through a cloud or while traveling 110 knots through moderate rain. At that speed there is water hitting the filter directly. I can assure you that not one drop of water remains a drop by the time it gets to the intake valves, let alone the combustion chamber. And remember how hot the air gets by the time it hits your throttle body. Hotter air holds more water before condensing into the form of a liquid. So what starts out as liquid water is most likely vapor by the time it meets its maker.

All air that enters your combustion chamber has water in it. It's called relative humidity. Whether it's in the form of vapor or liquid is the issue. If water is hitting an oil covered air filter do you really think that drop of water is going to travel up through the intake, past the throttle body, through the runners, past your valves etc. without turning into vapor? Of course not. The only way this could happen is if you were submerged or very close to it.

Furthermore everytime you shut off your engine there is "water" in your engine. It is a by product of combustion and it is in the air all around us. Oil and frequent driving helps to keep it from corroding everything. In aviation we are careful to fly our vehicles once a week for 45 minutes for that reason alone....to "boil the water" out of our engines after the oil has drained away from the cylinder walls.

So don't worry if you can see your air filter. Worry whether or not you plan on submerging your air filter into water, and worry about not driving your car once every few weeks.

You haven't flown your airplane underwater? You haven't lived until you've done that.

Re: CAI engine water damage

While the odds are against it, air intake systems with low mount air filters can and have caused engine hydro-locking. Since 1998 I've seen bent rods and damaged pistons out of several hydro-locked engines.

IMO, anyone with a low mount air filter should have an AEM by-pass or K&N "Drycharger" installed with their system.

That's my 2 cents... take it for what it's worth.

Re: CAI engine water damage

Well I'm not planning on going underwater this summer, but I think I might get a bypass valve anyways. Do they even make one for injen???

Re: CAI engine water damage

I used to have a Injen CAI however, after having the car washed one day and driving out of the parking spot, my car started to violently shake around 2700 rpms. I pulled into another parking lot and opened the hood. I let the car sit there for about 15 minutes and let the sun hit the engine directly. After that I started the car again and tested it. It was fine again, but the scare was enough to get rid of the injen cai.

What exactly is a run off? Does this mean he submerged the filter? I agree wholeheartedly that submerging the filter will trash your engine. I haven't seen any specific examples yet of non submerged CAIs trashing an engine due to water ingestion.

For those who aren't logged on to my350Z > G35 Coupe / Sedan...

"i have an ingen CAI on my G35 6speed coupe and went through a run off, a deep one in PA on tuesday, and it sucked up water into my motor. I was in 2nd going up a hill... It happened that I was around an infiniti dealership and the service manager had it towed to his shop. The shop said I need a new motor - $7500 + $4000 in labor. Is it possible that I need a new motor. It does not crank and they ruled out plugs. Could it be the coil or MAF? They also said it can't be rebuilt. Does anyone know a good rebuild shop that does G35 around NY,NJ or PA? and if I go that route, is it worth it to upgrade to performace parts?

Does any know where is the best place to get a VQ35 motor?

How would I know the engine is hosed and take the dealer's word for it?

any help would be great

WARNING to others - the extra gain in horses is not worth it"

I feel for the guy!
