Ran my car for a few seconds without oil ><

I was doing my oil change which I've done a many times before and I screwed up and the car slowly rolled off the ramp and stopped about in about 8ft. I had to get the car out of the alley so I just started it and pulled it back into my garage which took less than 10 sec. My friend tells me that I probably ruined the engine. He says the the bearing may blow with no oil pressure and that the same thing happened to his friend after about 500 miles.

Now I'm stressed. I really thought it would be ok to run it for a few seconds. What do you guys think?

Did you realize it didn't have oil in it? Only thing you can do I guess is drive it and see what happens???

Yes, I knew it had no oil in it but I had to get it out of the alley since cars go by all the time and there was no way I could push it up the incline into my garage. I did it as quickly as possible and I'm guessing maybe 5-7 seconds. Drove around and everything seems fine, but my friend says something a blow in the near future.

I'm realizing now how stupid it was. Just panicked and didn't want to block traffic.

You should be okay as long as it was a quick drive back up the ramps and you didn't floor it trying to get it out of the alley.

Oil has a pretty high affinity for most metals, so you still had some on the walls inside your engine. I really wouldn't sweat it.

I moved the ramps and gently pulled it back into the garage which has a slight incline at the entry. I was thinking that this would kinda be like starting the car in the morning when all the oil is sitting at the bottom, but my buddy went into a long explanation about the required oil pressure in the crank bearings. I had a new dry filter on the car so no oil pressure to these bearings is the problem.

There's nothing I can do at this point so I'll just keep my fingers crossed. Thanks for the input guys.

+1, especially if you're using synthetic.

just out of curiousity, why aren't you using wheel chocks? and i suggest you put your car in gear when you put your car on ramps. just an fyi

I jacked up the rear of the car to level it out which allows more oil to drain. Do this all the time, but this time the front tires were too close to the slope of the ramps. I'm used to my old honda that is front wheel drive so the tranny would catch it. Lesson learned.

Oh, and I did have synthetic in the engine.

You should be ok. It's a very bad idea and don't ever do it again but it's not like a new motor with no oil in it at all, this one has oil all over the place but the oil pressure shot off the chart when you started it empty. IMO you will be ok.
