D2S HID Bulb vs. D2R HID Bulb

Despite the temp diff of 4100k vs 8000k, IIRC, what are the negatives of using the higher temp bulb, will things melt? fry out the ballast? tried searching but couldn't find anything usefull through all the fat. Any help would be apprciated.

Re: D2S HID Bulb vs. D2R HID Bulb

ok did some more searching and found out that despite what others have posted the d2s and d2r are the same bulb, except that the d2s has a ceramic cap to aid in the cutoff pattern. Is this right? Forget it I am lost, let me know if someone understands these part numbers.

Re: D2S HID Bulb vs. D2R HID Bulb

D2R bulbs are used in Reflector type headlights. where they are a bit more restrictive of how much light they allow to pass.

D2S bulbs are only used in Projector type headlight where the bulbs pretty much outputs max light and the projector itself cas the metal plate built in to alow a specific cutoff.

I wouldn;t want to use D2S bulbs in a reflector type headlight due to the fact you will be blinding people. plus your light output will be all over and you my get some hot spots which kinda sucks.

Personal take... please dont do that.... i really hate how most of these ghetto kids slap on HIDs on their cars from other cars or kits ... have no f*&^ing clue what the hell they are doing then they think they are cool and drive around blinding people. i'm soo glad DOT is banning them.

Re: D2S HID Bulb vs. D2R HID Bulb

As an experiment, I took the d2r bulb out and scraped off the ceramic coating on it basically turning it into a d2s. There was no additional glare. Output was a little better though. The only negative was that the upper cutoff was a little less sharp. There was no light output where it should not have been.

Re: D2S HID Bulb vs. D2R HID Bulb

Hey

i just got off the phone with Philips, here is what they said

YOU CANNOT REPLACE YOUR D2R bulb with a D2S bulb, the houseing the ont D2S is different than D2R making it not fit.

I just found this out so i went ahead and replaced my 8000K D2S bulbs back to the stock ones.

MAKE SURE YOU GET D2R.

Re: D2S HID Bulb vs. D2R HID Bulb

There is a notch at the base of the bulb that is in different places on each bulb. It takes about 5 minutes (less if you have a dremel) to make another notch into the d2s to make it fit. I think someone posted a side by side pic of a d2s and a d2r. It's really not that hard to make it fit.

here's a great pic on both bases. the only difference between the bulbs is the location of the notch and the coating. https://g35driver.com/forums/showthr...hs&Main=260349
