Engine oil - Conventional or switch to Synthetic?
doesn't even have to be synthetic. Unless the owner manuals specifies synthetic oils and you're still under warranty I wouldn't waste that much money going for synthetic. The only thing synthetic offers over regular dino is basically better shear protection over the age of the oil. Also dino degradation rate is alot higher than synthetic so the oil goes bad within 4-5 months. I use whatever i have a stash of that i got on sale. Valvoline syn power and Napa synthetic are actually the same base oil but slight different additive package. Mobile 1 uses Group III+ base oils now with some slight PAO. Amsoil, redline, royal purple are both group IV,V base oil PAO(these are the truely synthetics group III and III+ are considered hydrocracked dino) Castol Syntec is all group III depending on which oil grade, Pennzoil Platinum is also group III. Pennzoil Yellow bottle is actually group II+
so for the money it is very good oil to use. As for oil filters, im not a fram basher so im not going to say stay away from them, but if you use them i'd change them out at 3000-3500 miles. Bosch now owns purolator so bosch and Pure ones are same except different media filter. Mobile 1 and K&N filters are one of the best.
also to note, synthetic can be ran for much longer intervals than dinos. I run synthetics for 7500 miles depending on which oil filter i use.
amsoil can be ran for around 20k miles as well.

Also any reason why you are switching synethetics? I've been using Mobil 1 ever since I bought my car, but lately I've been hearing grumblings of Pennzoil Platinum being better, etc.
OEM filters are trash, consider switching to Purolator PureOne filters, but make sure it's PureOne, and not just any Purolator filter. They are dirt cheap and the same as Napa Gold and Wix, which are both held in high regard.

i havent been hearing good things about mobil 1...ive used mobile 1 in my previous vehicles(wrx, s2000, galant vr-4)
wrx-spun rod bearings
s2k-burned a ****load of oil
galant vr-4-spun rod bearings
Castrol.
I use conventional oil. I change it frequently as to keep clean oil in the engine, so the added longevity of synthetic is of no use to me. I've town down plenty of engines with 100K+ miles on conventional to see the factory hatching on the cylinder walls to beleive that a quality conventional oil is just fine.

M1 15w50 x 7qts.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but synthetic oils also have a smaller particle size, so on an engine with very tight tolerances (like a 300 hp VQ v6), you will get better lubrication throughout the engine.
Just go to walmart. They sell 5 quart jugs of mobile1, penzoil, castrol, synthetic for around $21-$26. Then keep an eye out for the autozone coupons in the sunday paper. They frequently do buy one get one free bosch filters. Comes out to a couple bucks per filter. I change every 7500 miles. 83k so far and my engine still purrs like a kitten. doesn't burn a drop of oil either.
If you like to change your oil more often, then you can save some money and get non synthetic.

I beg to differ. From what I've read, Mobil1 (not Mobile 1) 0w-40 is PAO (Grp IV).
I beg to differ here as well. From what I've read, Castrol Syntec 0w-30 (aka GC) is Grp IV.
Assuming the OP is no longer in warranty, there have been people who have been using Mobil1 0w-40 in the VQ35's with very good UOA.
I personally use Castrol Syntec 0w-30 in my 08 G.

this is from 2006. Castrol has been through many reformulations since then. Unless you had a stock pile of the old castrol it is all GROUP III. Yes Mobil 1 0w-40 is still PAO, but not all PAO. Most oil users uses 5w-30 or 5w-20 due to C.A.F.E standards. Just because one grade that barely anyone uses is of a certain blend does not make the entire stock line same.
