Wasn't too long ago there were no struts (shocks) on any cars. They were all springs, even on the hood. Big coils up front, and long tortion rods in the trunk.
Times have changed.

G35_TX,
Fair enough, I just saw a nasty comment of FA and then came over here and it seemed like you were posting on every message board there is. I'm sorry for jumping to the gun and making assumptions. Plus, in your defense, you could have mentioned that there are other people who are selling/advertising mods on this website that may/may not be authorized solicitors, so your arguement is valid.
Given the above apology, I don't really see the need for this item (for me any way). At all of the car shows I've been to for G35's and 350Z's it seems that most people remove the stock support bar and replace it with an aluminum anodized tube (blue or red usually) that is maybe 18-24" long.
Then again, I suppose there are people who would not buy an OEM window roll up module for ~$65 too, so what do I know...
Good Luck with your adventure!
The above statements are only my take on the issue. If you disagree with anything I typed then you are 100% right!

I'm definitely down for this mod.
I was planning to make one myself, but if you get it worked out
thats even better.

InTgr8r,
Haha, yeh man, we're dating ourselves here. UGGG. My first was a '57 Ford. -- now there was a POS, but at the time it was the world to me, and got me going with the car craze.

Kudos have to go to G35_TX (Russell), for his work on this mod. He's the one doing all the leg work, and fielding a little flack to boot.
I salute your stick-to-it-iveness, Russell. There are many here who would love a mod like this.
If I can pitch in with anything, just say the word.

You don't have to be old to remeber those. My '88 F150 has those! The phyics are a bit more complicated than cardbord.
Its not a normal cantilever(3) and that's why I think it okay.
In the diagram our hood is no.(1) The main moment of force isn't taken at the crumple zone, but farther down. Also the wieght of the hood isn't evenly distributed.

Re: Sneak peak of hood struts for the G35....soon !
I'm not understanding your concept here. The issue of possibly affecting the crumple zone design is only applicable when the hood is CLOSED. The stock design (sedan anyway) has two hefty interlocks at the back of the hood connecting to the firewall (presumably a structural hard point) to ensure that (1) the hood doesn't move from that point and into the cabin, and (2) that the compressive load transferred from a frontal collision is stopped there, and cause the hood to buckle or accordion in some intentional way that absorbs the most energy before the hard points themselves yield. Note that the existing hinges also play into this design, but they are probably secondary and have been accounted for in the crash design.
When you add another connection point (or node) with struts, you may disturb the way that the hood will buckle, AND add another point for the compressive crash load to be transferred to the fender. This change may or may not be consequential, and would have to be evaluated by an engineering model or analysis. If the strut could be made with "break-away" attachment bolts, its effect would be much less.

Re: Sneak peak of hood struts for the G35....soon !
Well, yeah.... THOSE are issues too!!! I'm just addressing the issue of the hood holding its own weight, when open.
The worry is about the hood breaking or creasing under its own weight!
I completely agree with what you are saying about it being closed!

Re: Sneak peak of hood struts for the G35....soon !
Good point guys, and nice diagrams Wrah.
This all goes back to my salesperson going out of his way to point out the hood prop and to tell me that the reason that the G35 is the ONLY infiniti that doesn't have struts was because it can't be done with an aluminum hood. Now, if it can safely be done with this hood then that would make my car salesguy a liar, and I have never met a dishonest car salesman....
I don't think the hood will buckle or break, but I think it might warp or at least weaken itself if kept up for long periods of time.
Is the hood that instrumental in crashes? I always thought the bumper/fenders were responsible for absorbing impact and that the hood as just kinda there. These are just basic assumptions though and I would love to know more about this subject.

Re: Sneak peak of hood struts for the G35....soon !
Noremac,
Your last paragraph made a good point re: possible load transfer to the fender by the strut in a frontal crash, which could change the manner in which the hood buckles. This buckling of the hood is an important part of protecting vehicle occupants in a front-end collision at higher speeds.
Although intuitively I would guess a minimal effect -- making this a safe mod (because I think most crumpling occurs ahead of the strut points), I think it's difficult to predict the new crumple-zone dynamics with absolute certainty -- even Infiniti engineers would probably crash test it once to compare the empirical data with their engineering analysis.
I think that if Infiniti were to offer this from the factory, they might even be required under regulation to submit the design change to NHTSA for crash testing to receive a new rating for frontal-impact collisions.
In such a case, they would probably do their own tests before submitting to the NHTSA (and IIHS) tests, and if they found the rating would be reduced, they likely wouldn't release it. The cost of this type of re-testing is in part why mid-model structural changes usually don't happen -- they're too expensive, and thus limited to the aftermarket where regulatory hurdles don't exist.

Thank you guys. I will definitely keep you informed of the progress. It will be delayed a little bit due to me leaving town for a week on July 8th. So after I get back I will continue my work on getting these working.
