Remote start dreams = remote start nightmare lol

I know this isnt quite about a g, but i was considering having this done to my g (my friend had it done on his lightening and its awsome to get to his car and it be super cool inside already while walking across the parking lot + he knows a guy who would do it for me for cost of parts). Well i have black interior in a black g and live in houston texas and its summer. We get up in the mid 90's and stay there for about 3-5 months a year and it kinda sucks. the aluminum emblem on top of my shifter (says gears 1, 2,3,4,5,6, r).... well it gets where i cant touch it because its too hot and it burns my palm. The range on my remote is ridiculous (close to 75-100 yards id say... but i have to hold it under my chin and use my body as antenna *my uncle works for lexus and showed me this and it really does double the range*), so i thot GReat mod for pretty cheap.

well now getting to the story that makes me not want this any longer. My friend's brother recently purchased a mustang 4.6 in a stick.... while he was attempting to sell a bmw (works at bmw of the woodlands texas), he hit his remote start feature in his pocket and low and behold... BAM! he hears his new stang hit a brick wall. LOLLLL he left his car in first gear and his ebrake was not engaged very well he siad (only a couple of clicks up). Well u know when u first turn on the car how it revs up pretty high.... aka.. high enough to make a car leap forward that is in gear and smash a wall LOL. Well he didnt wanna deal with it and just sold the car that he had had for about 4 days back to bmw because they ended up giving him full price back since he worked there. It didnt really talk me outa getting one i guess... i always leave my ebrake fully engaged and the car in 2nd gear (NOT 1st!! LOL) so that it wont roll away or if my ebrake fails it'll be caught too.... so i guess the worst that would happen is my car would stall out. But when using remote start... just remember.... always leave car in neutral... tahts the moral of the story....

the day before this his brother was telling me he was gonna hand me my *** in a race lol... i guess we'll never know now. Karma man... dont talk mess to g-owners Mr domestic 4.6 liter displacement man

Re: Remote start dreams = remote start nightmare lol

If you search hard enough you can find a remote start that will not work if the car is left in gear. I was originally going to go that route, but it would require me to have two fobs... one for the remote start and one for the alarm. I passed on safety. It's very hard to accidently remote start my car, due to the sequence and timing needed. However, I only remote start in two places... work and home. Both places are level and don't require my car to be in gear. When I do park it in gear, I have a "locking" mechanism on my FOB which I enable. This way I won't accidently forget.

Re: Remote start dreams = remote start nightmare l

i just always leave my car in gear because i had a friend with an old '91 240 that he used to drift like crazy in and he pulled the ebrake so much that it eventually started to fail sometimes and he would walk out and find his car just in the street or something in front of his house. This was before i got my car (or driver's license for that matter), but since i saw that... i just always leave my car in gear when i park and pull my ebrake... o yeah and it also taught me that maybe pulling the ebrake in order to lock up the back wheels is most likely not so great for the car lol

Re: Remote start dreams = remote start nightmare lol

We had a saying at the shop that I used to install at - Everyone who has a stick with a remote start has accidently started thier car in gear at least once - myself included. One guy did it the night we put it on (he worked there), he parked his car in neutral in his driveway, then his wife 'borrowed' his car without him knowing, she parked it back in the same spot in first gear. He went to leave later that night and wanted to test out his new remote start system, not knowing his wife had reparked the car. It was funny.

I even had a magnetic switch setup on my shifting rods that were supposed to not let my car start in gear, a home made neutral safety switch. But, eventually it failed an my 94 Cavalier was in reverse. It jumped backwards and hit a full size GM truck. Didn't leave a mark on the truck, but broke my tail lights and put a hole in my bumper

The good news is is that the G35 has a factory Neutral safety switch. Its actually called the PNP (Park Neutral Position) switch and is mounted inside the tranny. It goes to ground whenever and only when the car is in neutral. This signal can be used to allow your car to only start when it is in neutral.

Don't EVER trust your parking break to stop your car from jumping. It most cases it will not hold your car. Even in my brand new G I once drove a little ways with my ebrake on and could barely tell there was resistance.

Re: Remote start dreams = remote start nightmare lol

Yes, this happens quite often, which is why most alarm shops will not install a remote start on a manual transmission. Approximately half a yr ago, an associate of ours who owns a wheels / tires shop had an employee break both of his legs when he accidentally activated the remote start while he was in front of the car. Now, the customer of the vehicle is being sued and he is in a wheelchair.

I do have the remote start on both of my Gs including my 6MT, but have the alarm hooked up to the ECM for neutral safety. Took me some time to find it, but definitely worth it.

Re: Remote start dreams = remote start nightmare lol

I have one on my 6MT too and am using the neutral safety switch that Kevin mentioned. It works fine and will not start if the car is in any gear besides neutral, regardless of if the parking brake is on or off. IMO, using a factory switch is much better than an installer adding a magnet switch, etc. It also allows it to be used with any remote start unit and doesn't require a manual-specific one like compustar.
