Exclamation Close "money shift" call... Possible damage?

I was on the on-ramp to the freeway on my way home from dinner today and the guy in front of me was accelerating VERY slowly (not even 40 mph and we were nearly at the end of the on-ramp with at least 5 or 6 cars behind me, all tailgating to high hell). To me, that is extremely unsafe especially when the lanes are forced to merge and traffic on the freeway is traveling at least 65 mph. I decided to go WOT and shoot past him before my lane merged into his (two lane on-ramp). I was currently in 4th so I dropped it down to 3rd (I have a 6MT), climbed to about 60-65 mph, and when I was about to shift back into 4th, I accidentally went to 2nd . I know there is potential serious damage had the shift pushed me passed redline, but I don't believe it did (if it did, barely notable). It wasn't like I was doing a 5th to 2nd shift from 85 mph, but I feel I was going fast enough to make myself worry a little. I did some calculations for the maximum speed at each gear and 2nd came to be more or less 65 mph (can someone confirm this?) There wasn't any unusual noise/feeling for the rest of the ride home, nor did I smell any burning or anything when I pulled into the garage. I'm assuming everything is okay, but is it too soon to tell if I did any serious damage?

The screaming sound of the engine at the time was loud and aggressive enough to make my heart skip a couple beats and send chills down my spine. I know I'm probably acting a little paranoid but this is my baby and I just wanna know if it's okay

2nd gear tops out somewhere around 60-65 so you might be OK

thats what your rev limiter is for, to protect your motor from the driver

If it happened just once, you should be fine. Haven't done that in my G35 yet, but in my previous car (Maxima), I was doing about 75 in 3rd, and dropped it to 2nd instead of 4th.... Was able to drive it a few more years with no issues and sold it....

It's set at 6600 for my car... Regardless of rev limiter or not, there still had to have been some level of stress right? I know it shuts the engine down after some critical point to prevent damage (or it does something along those lines)...

Did that once in my 95 Saturn SL2. The transmission exploded. Front tires locked up and sent me into a spin. I ended up in the center ditch facing the wrong way. Sold the car for scrap.

Rev limiter will do nothing when your pushing the engine past it mechanically by down shifting improperly.

If you punched the clutch as soon as you realized what was going on, you should be fine. (You would know by now if you blasted any seals, rods, the engine block or transmission.)

lol.... reading from the top, I wondered who'd be the 1st.

For those that don't understand.....
An over rev downshift AKA money shift; WILL rev past the rev limiter.

Your engine will be driven by your ground speed, through the back wheels and
mechanically FORCED to over rev.

back to the OP....
From your description, it sounds like you'll be OK.

BTW, I know of a guy that took out his S54 M engine in an M3.
That cost him $LARGE$
IDK about the Infiniti CPU, but BMW stores data for max RPMs
This guy tried to claim warranty, but he didn't get far because of the data log.

Yeah this happened a while back and there hasn't been anything wrong with the car...

Just a question though...
Has anyone accidentally gone way up.. Like 8k+ revs? Is it pretty much a guarantee that the engine would be pretty much shot at that point or is the G35 able to handle that level of abuse?

You'll be ok.

Side not: U should have downshifted to 2nd instead of 3rd when going 40.

Learn when the gears redline.
1st 30 mph.
2nd 58mph
3rd 85mph
4rth 105mph
5th 135mph
6th 155mph @ 6000 rpm.

BTW u should practice redline shifting once in a while so when u do get into a situation like this u won't go into a wrong gear in the future. If you are used to granny driving, you will always miss-shift when once in a blue moon need to actually go WOT.

The rev limiter isn't going to do anything when its mechanically forced.
