Two questions about Tire Care

First one is...

Is that spray on stuff that makes your tires look wet, and shiny bad for the tire?

And secondly, what PSI should I keep my front and rear tires at currently 30 PSI (cold).

Thanks
-BM

Re: Two questions about Tire Care

My thoughts on the 2 questions:

1) No, it isn't bad for the tire but try not to get it on the tread part of the tire too much since it really can make the tire tread slip. Try also to keep it from getting on the rim. some of those tire products do bad things to rims depending on the type of rim you have. Some people also tend to put too much tire product on and once they start driving it slings up on the car's paint. If you apply alot make sure you wipe it down after it sits for some time.

2) 35 PSI cold I believe is the factory spec. check the inside drivers side door to be certain.

Best of luck with your G BlckMgk!

Re: Two questions about Tire Care

"cold" meaing that the car has been sitting (im guessing driving warms up the air in the tire a considerable amount and makes the air pressure higher) right?

Re: Two questions about Tire Care

A friend of mine asked what the BMW dealerships use...they use something called SuperBlue and use a brush to apply it.

I drive mine at 32.

And yes, cold means that your car has not been driven for at least 2 hours. I would recommend measuring your tires first thing in the morning.

Cold as in cold after sitting overnight, and I just checked inside my car door. Infiniti recommends 30/30 psi (cold); I have my tires at 32-33 psi cold, which gets to about 36 psi, hot after driving around.

Re: Two questions about Tire Care

The industry standard for measuring tire performace parameters in the lab is 35 psi for standardiztion of data.

The load test ratings are measurd at 44 or 51 psi depending on tire construction.

51 psi tires tend to require around 38-40-42 psi to approximate the 34-35 psi of 44 maximum psi tires. As the 51 psi tires have ballon like sidewalls and little inherent sidewall strength.

Re: Two questions about Tire Care

you are correct. Driving does warm the air inside the tire. And since the tire is releativly standar in volume the pressure increases. If you were to adjust the pressure to 35psi on a tire you have been driving on when the air in the tire cools it will be underinflated and could apprear flat.

howstuffworks.com always has some interesting reads on issues... you should check it out:

Re: Two questions about Tire Care

What?...In English please???? Just to clarify...are you saying that the tires should be 34-35 psi cold? If so, then why would Infiniti put a sticker in the door which says 30/30 psi is recommended? I typically like a little more air in my tires than 30 psi, which makes 34-35 psi sound ok to me, but I know they do get hot and the pressure gets about 3-5 psi higher. I don't want uneven wear in the middle (if overinflated) and on the sides (if underinflated).

Before I adjusted the tire pressure in my tires recently, I took a long highway trip and stopped at a rest stop to check my tire pressure...they all read about 42 psi (very hot); that still seemed a bit high...Infiniti had set them all to about 38-39 psi (cold), so I lowered them.
