crawford cats + Plenum = failed emissions?
crawford cats + Plenum = failed emissions?
the final setup that i think that i will be going for (all before my first year of ownership (ie first emissions test) is this
ztube
popcharger
crawford cats
crawford plenum
injen exhaust
TS ECU
will this casue any problems as far as inspection goes? I talked ot the guy doing inspections at the shell station where i go to get mine done, and he said that i would not pass with straight pipes because the computer would tell him that im not running cats. I didnt ask about high flowing cats or anything, but im not sure what the result woud be.
i know this is how they do the inspection. They stick a little 2 foot pole connected to a comptuer into the exhaust and idle the car for a while for emissions. I would think that this would give less accruate (in the modders favor) than if it was done with the car revving or on a dyno or something. i dunno tho... just thot id give as much info as possible.
thanks in advance for responses

Re: crawford cats + Plenum = failed emissions?
I ran the tailpipe sniffer test on my G35 with Crawford plenum + intake , passes easily. Now as far as the "visual inspection" part, depends on how **** the inspector is (since the components do not have EO#s.
Re: crawford cats + Plenum = failed emissions?
I had mine tested for ***** and giggles and mine passed... WITH HELIX TEST PIPES!!! Of course they wouldn't pass visually, but around here an inspection consists of driving around the block and making sure your brakes and horn work and your car doesn't smoke...

Re: crawford cats + Plenum = failed emissions?
im not worried too much about visual inspection, just dont want it failing the "sniffer" test as someone earlir called it. thats the only thing i care about really

Re: crawford cats + Plenum = failed emissions?
If it helps I offer this:
I had a 97 5spd Maxima and had difficulties finding a place to smog it due to the extensive mod work on it.
I found a state run operation that understood what CARB certified was and they ran it.
Mods at the time:
Vortech Supercharger
10 PSI Pulley
Vortech FMU 8:1
Custom Cold-air + K&N
Y-pipe (removal of two pre-cats)
RT Primary Cat
Greddy Exhaust
and a variety of other little tweaks
Anyways, I tested and passed barely. This was in 2002 in Los Angeles. I think I was one off of the limit in NOX emission. Everything else was great.
My advice is to run the **** out of your car before you test it, get it as hot as possible, do not run the test with a cold engine.
Newer cars have harder to meet requirements so the primary alone might not be enough, but then again my car was SC'd and had 2 cat deletes.
I recall that almost all Maxima owners with just Intake, Ypipe, and exhaust were passing without any issues. I would have to imagine you'll pass even with the test pipes.

I forgot our cars don't have a primary cat, thus, you will DEFINITELY FAIL with test pipes. Without a catalytic reaction of some sort your car will be so off the charts in a smog test.

Re: crawford cats + Plenum = failed emissions?
CATS, well our cars both Z and G "do" have primary CATs they are just "housed together" with the secondaries. That's why they are so long and heavy. All aftermarket HF CATs replace the OEM dual stage units with single primary stages. This includes RT, Crawford , Kinetix, Ultimate etc. etc..
Re: crawford cats + Plenum = failed emissions?
the smog test here in texas is the only thing im worried about... im sure that i will pass eveerything else. I emailed doug at crawford and he emailed me back saying to call him on this issue... im guessing that means that he is going to say "they are illegal for street use... but if u were to smog them.... they would definatly pass" and give me a little wink face. But i dont think he wanted to email that response... wants to say it on the phone rahter than have a written record probably... im going to call him tommoorow during my lunch

Re: crawford cats + Plenum = failed emissions?
Doug's funny about email....I could never get him to say anything in it, even innocuous comments about the color of the plenum. Good thing is, when you call him you can bend his ear about all sorts of stuff about your G. That **** knows alot about them so get your moneys worth on the phone while you got him.
Going on a month now and my Crawford cats are running strong and sounding great. Definitely a noticeable power mod, particularly when combined with the plenum.
Here in Memphis its simple to pass emissions and they do not visually inspect the cats. I guess it's just different everywhere you go.

Raznips,
Let me tell you as a fellow Texan, you will have no problem at all. If you were in California, you MIGHT have a problem. In Texas, we still have people driving pickups with glass packs.
Don't worry about it at all!
