Hood Struts are a no go for the G35....

Guys, after experiementing some more, and getting one step stronger struts. They would not clear the hood anymore due to the size increase. Also the hood was starting to flex before bringing the hidges/struts down. I didn't like this. So I ate the RND for this project myself.

Sorry guys!

Damn......I thought we were on the way to having the strut install for our cars......I had a sneaking suspicion that the hood might flex, sorry it didn't work out. Thanks again for your efforts...

No need to help. I was prepared to eat the costs anyways. Thank you for offering though.

Re: Hood Struts are a no go for the G35....

The 350z struts were just not strong enought to hold our hood up, but they allowed the 350z hood to close with ease and not flex.

Re: Hood Struts are a no go for the G35....

I'm still going to have a go at this.
I have a friend that does a lot of custom work. We were looking at a different mounting position that would lever the hood better with less flex.
We probably won't get to this for another month or so, due to other mods in progress.....

I'll pop a thread when I have more info.

Re: Hood Struts are a no go for the G35....

What might work, is having one that is about 2-3 x as long as the current ones, and it attaches close to the front of the hood and it also attaches at the back of the fender near the wipers. This would put almost no stress on the hood and all of it on the fender itself which is metal.

Re: Hood Struts are a no go for the G35....

Yes, that's basically what we had in mind.
There are a couple of possible lcations, I don't think we have to go all the way to the front.
One of the mounting criterial is to be out of the way for clear engine bay access.

You're definately on to something there. Supports that mount to the middle of the hood and the back of the engine compartment would easily be strong enough to hold that light of a hood up.

Where to get struts that long though?

It seems like hatchbacks usually have some pretty long struts on them....

I may be wrong though but I'm thinking that the firebirds and cameros have some long ones on 'em. Also maybe the Eclipses. I know that they have heavy a$$ deck lids on them.

Re: Hood Struts are a no go for the G35....

have you guys look at the 02 maxima struts? I was thinking to use them, since I think the max's hood is heavier.

Re: Hood Struts are a no go for the G35....

When I first picked up my Coupe, I had made the observation there were no factory hood struts, so I started researching it at the time, & though I have not confirmed all of these as facts; what I came to understand at the time (when Coupe's were first released), was that the hood was made of aluminum, & not steel like the coupes side panels, etc... The overall tensile strength of a weight saving material like aluminum, is lower, you sacrifice some of the rigidity over the entire surface area, for a lighter hood, reducing weight. So, long story short, though coupes are tanks, & much body paneling in steel, the hood might be aluminum, & the hood could flex or bed under the force required to drive the struts, which could mean, well, bent hoods, etc..

My advice if thinking about trying it. It seems like something Infiniti would do!! Try to confirm what the hood is made of, & if it is aluminum, then it does stand to reaosn it may not be strong enough.....

Just my 2 cents.
