Aftermarket oil cooler question

I've searched around, but I haven't found anyone that asked or who has done this. My question is, would it be ok to run an aftermarket oil cooler in series with the OE oil cooler/warmer? If I can avoid adding an extra sandwich plate, that'd be ideal.

Input?

I'm also very interested in these man. I'm looking to do this but I haven't seen a lot of options on how the install goes besides the stillen where you drill into the oil pan..at least I think thats how its done.

There's no need to drill into the pan for an oil cooler. All you need is a sandwich adapter (goes between your oil filter and the current oil cooler/warmer adapter). The adapter has a feed and a return line, so no drilling/tapping is required.

However, if I don't NEED to add another adapter, I'd rather not. That's just more chance of popping a leak or something...

Oh, and in your case, if you DO get a sandwich adapter, I'd highly recommend one with a built-in thermostat (for your cold weather ventures).

How would you run it in series with the stock setup without a seperate adapter though?

There's already an OE adapter there. It has an out/in for oil. The setup would run stock adapter out, into the OE cooler/warmer plumbing, IN to the aftermarket cooler, out the aftermarket cooler, and return back into the OE adapter.

oh, i see, so you are talking about splitting off of that as opposed to an additional sandwich plate.

I can't see how it would make much of a difference. It seems like you would have more pressure drop and chance of leak with an additional sandwich plate.

Yeah, I'm talking about running it like I mentioned in the previous post. The only disadvantages that I can see is that the OE setup is also a warmer. It runs the oil through some piping that is warmed by the coolant. So, I'm not sure if this would negate the additional cooling effects of the aftermarket cooler or not...

I guess I could start out using it in series, and if I'm not content with that, I could always install the sandwich plate and see if my temps drop any or go up...

Ya, if you do that you might want to double check the warm-up time. Hard to tell in PHX since its so damn hot. I go out to my car in the morning and its like 105* in the garage.

Have you checked my350z yet? There is generally a lot more info on things like this. I'm looking into this right now myself.

Yup. I'll have an oil temp sensor in the lower oil pan monitoring temps.

I've searched around here and My350Z and haven't found any information on the topic.

Have you heard of people running SS headers in arizona that had engine temp issues? I should have had them Jet-Hot coated...but didnt.

Hmmm. I'm not really sure. I know Greg is running some DC Sports. But I think his might be ceramic coated.

Ya, I was talking to him and he said that it shouldn't have any problems but I know my car engine bay temps are hotter than they have ever been. I think the reason my car was running hot before was from the headers. I've had it increase a couple times since then. Unless there is a small leak somewhere...in which case I should get some dye to check for a possible small leak.

sorry for the thread jack.

Yeah. I've browsed through that thread. That buy, Binder, has NO idea about what he's asking/talking about.
