Installed Z tube, impressed with the sound
Installed Z tube, impressed with the sound
just an FYI. My otherwise stock (non cosmetically speaking) coupe now has the ztube on it. Kept the stock air box.
The sound difference is quite intriguing. It's noticeable under load and beg. at about 3k rpms. It's really noticeable in my parking garage. Sounds like I changed the exhaust.
Interestingly, the stock intake looks more or less identical inside the tube with the exception the two inlets of what must be the sound baffles on the top and bottom. It doesn't seem to me that the stock intake really restricts airflow. It doesn't appear that these openings cause bad turbulence or restriction. Other than that, the inside diameters and curveature appear about the same. Maybe ever so slightly more curve on the stock unit. Not enough to change performance, imo.
I would be concerned about the bottom housing which dangles like a ******* down in the engine bay, very close to the upper manifolds. Talk about a heat soak potential.
All in all it was $80 very well spent. The car just screams when I get on it.

Re: Installed Z tube, impressed with the sound
i know this has probably been asked (and answered) a billion times already....buuuuuut does the Z tube and pop charger hurt the engine at all..especially long term life?
and if you bring it in for service, will they say anything about it or just leave it alone??

Re: Installed Z tube, impressed with the sound
will not hurt the engine.... 50% of that mod is still OEM parts.
The dealers do not care about the tube... however, be careful that it does not rub your AC tubing. It can rub through, iif it touching and then they will not warranty that for you.
Put a little rubber foam or thick two sided 3M tape in you have this problem.

I use 3.25"X10" Aluminum tubing, breather, and extra hose. It sounds much different (I love it). It runs me about $40 for this setup.

Re: Installed Z tube, impressed with the sound
I thought the very same thing about the stock tube compared to the Z tube. But if you think about it, if you blow over a coke bottle it makes a lot of noise. to make that noise some of the air is going down and swirling inside the bottle. an easy mod for the sotck tube would be to glue some thin lexan down over the holes which would effectively make a straight shot into the intake just like the Z tube does.

Re: Installed Z tube, impressed with the sound
The Z tube doesn't rub or come near my AC line. I thought this problem was with aftermarket parts. The z tube is the same diameter as stock, just doesn't have the sound baffles on the top and bottom.
