I took my car in for oil consumption test.. grrr.
My car burns oil, no doubt about it. As far as the cross stitch area on the dipstick, I averaged personally, that it burns 1/4th of the oil on the cross stitch area every 1000 miles. How many quarts is that? (mm?) I brought her in, asked for the test, then they topped and taped off everything and I came back in 1000 miles, which turned out to be more like 1250 miles.
They said I only burn 1/3rd of a quart every 1000 miles... is that true?? Every time I get an oil change it goes from light tan oil at H to dark black oil at L.
I have a pic of where the oil was when I got back to my car, after they said I only burn 1/3rd oil...I'm annoyed that my car is burning any oil at all.
Let me know if they are full of it or not, thanks, I appreciate it.

Just remember to be precise about changing oil and filter every 90 days if you want to maintain your current excellant low oil consumption.
Due to low oil volume I would examine every week or two and add when 1/2 quart low, but I like for engines to last 20 years and 300,000+ miles which requires work on owners part!

If the cross stitch area is equal to a quart, then thats about right. They said 1/3rd, I said 1/4th.
Even though I'd rather it be at ZERO!
That ruling about 1 quart every 1000 miles is ok, is completely bull ****. I mean filling your engine with a quart every 1000 miles?! WOW. I think anything more than a half quart of oil burned in 3000 miles deserves a new engine. Or, before that even happens, better engineers to design the engine.

ha i wish my oil burn as little as that. i just got my engine replaced in spring. i am still burning about a quart every 1000 miles. Dealer now has my car and did oc test for the new replacement engine well see the test results in 1000 miles. Has anyone else had an issue with the replacement rev up engine?
I just got my engine block replaced for the same issue. Within 1300 miles of the oil comsumption test, the dip stick was about 10mm below the H level which is clearly a FAIL. I've been about 200 miles into the new block so we'll see how this new block performs.
The whole Oil turning dark, is because the oil is suppose to suspend particles and such in the oil itself so it turns black, It also depends on your filter.
Atleast thats what I read about, might be wrong

My oil went down between H and L just as much as yours did in that pic but my car did that in about 380-400 miles.. Nissan said I was consuming a lot.

So far with my 08 every oil change has looked like it was pretty much just put in. Just enough color to make reading the dipstick easier.
I would document this very carefully, maybe going as far as measuring all the oil that is drained after an oil change and exactly how much is used to replace it so you can have a running record of just how much it consumes. Later on when you may need to make a claim you may be able to show a trend on how that consumption progresses.
If you are burning 1/3 quart or so per 1000 miles I would call that excessive for a newer car but then the one making that decision if push comes to shove probably would state otherwise.
If you have to pass emission checks keep in mind that excessive oil use will influence various test results so you may have another avenue in that direction.
I think it came to the conclusion in another thread that it is in fact the piston rings.
so why don't they just get better ones? weird, go thru a whole new engine, damn.
i actually just got an oil change requested by infiniti today. i'm gonna bring back my car in 1000 miles to start the test as well. i dont know the exact levels on how much oil my car burns.. but i noticed every 2500 miles or so i start to hear a clanking sound from my car during low rpms.. and when i add more motor oil.. it goes away.. so i know i burn quite a bit. i have an 06 revup engine 6MT with about 56k
