Re: RAM AIR SETUP Project Completed

We love used cars with oiled air filters [never cleaned and changed] generates as lot of engine replacement business for us on Q, J30, G20 - ES300, GS400 etc. The 2nd and 3rd owners invoke every curse known to man against the previous owners........they almost never track them down and burn them at the stake, however.

Not to say that the air filter was all of the problems just coupled with oil intervals, it is additive.

But how many owners care about the next guy anyway?

Re: RAM AIR SETUP Project Completed

Dennis,

You have convinced me. But it still is a matter of perspective and perception and explaining it well enough to people.

Found a good set of articles that apply to this thread from someone who did a little homework...

One quote: "The trouble with 'ram-air' systems on road cars is that often they aren't. Ram-air, that is. By the time you collect enough air and shove it into the airbox, negative pressures lurking around corners in the intake duct and at its entrance have probably assassinated the pressure gained by the forward movement. Plus, how d'you know that the place you're trying to pick air up from is under positive pressure anyway?"

About future owners, they know what they are buying... a car with 70 or 80K miles with no warranty. 1st owners should who took the "hit" have no reason to fear the karma. Unless, you misrepresent.

Re: RAM AIR SETUP Project Completed

The important thing for people to pick up on is Q45tech's quote...

In reply to:

We love used cars with oiled air filters [never cleaned and changed]

This is why it is important to clean and re-oil your oiled air filters. Doing this properly will bring you many years of continued use without MAF/oil problems. (stating a belief here...) Q- is just pointing out that it is very easy to make a $500 mistake, and it is also easy to "forget" to clean and re-oil the filter if you're not doing it on a regular basis.

The above statements are only my take on the issue. If you disagree with anything I typed then you are 100% right!

Re: RAM AIR SETUP Project Completed

Remember my perspective, T3 is a specialty independent that usually sees ONLY Infiniti/Lexus [work on nothing else]after the warranty has expired [maybe 10% of our customers have cars still under warranty]. Where they price shop 30/60k major services. We have about 12 G35 oil change customers who were previous Infiniti owners so they just come back.
We are $75/hr whereas local Lexus dealers are up to $110/hr.

We see cars AFTER the damages have been done, nothing like 14 year old Q45, G20 or LS400 with over 300,000 miles to sharpen your skills. Our highest mile newest car customer is a 98Q with 287,000 miles, not unusual to see 3 year old cars with 90,000 miles around ATL. We own a ragged out 90 Q with 434,130 miles, my personal Q has 268,000 miles. So we know the previous weaknesses and much gets carried over to the I35/G35/M45/Q45.

So all my comments are for long range reliability. People who trade at 60k or lease should just ignore them.

Re: RAM AIR SETUP Project Completed

From a business standpoint, I really should be promoting things that lower the longterm reliability, to create future business. Old habits die hard but I'll try..............everybody really should modify the heck out of their G35 and use cheap oil and never change it, buy cheap tires/brake pads so they have accidents which won't be repaired 100%...........that way 3-4-5 years from now our business will increase.

Follow the minimal maintenance schedule, don't do a thing extra and skimp where ever you can, Please. My techs have young children who need to go to college.

Only you can help assure the long term success of a automotive repair business!

LOL. With family and friends in AHN, ATL, PDK and FYY I have to agree....help out Dennis and the local economy. Heck even if we do everything right, you should have no shortage of rattle fixing on the G. I find a new one every week.

Re: RAM AIR SETUP Project Completed

You really have to have owned a old G20 to understand what a G35 is........the bottom of the barrel in the the Infiniti line.

No matter how you dress up a entry lux level car it is still price point designed and built even in Japan.

But in all fairness it is a upper middle of the road car considering Nissans entire range not sold in US.

""The average new car price in US in June 2004 has climbed to $30,481 and the average income of such buyers has increased to ~~$74,000. {in 1995 average price of a new vehicle was $23,600},

Yeah the old FM platform is so bottomed out they are putting the M45 on it. Seems to me the G will be worth even more when the sticker shocked M buyers realize they can get a similarly fast better handler for 25-30 k less.
