vortech supercharger
Re: vortech supercharger
I know people who have had problems with belt dusting, and having their belts getting chewed up. I also thing that there is an extensive list of items you need to buy along with the Vortec to have a relatively safe system. Esemes was on the right track for a while, but since he sold his G, I've seen a post or two where even he missed an important item that would be good to add to the grocery cart. I'm guessing that a Vortec with all of the things you'd need to add would run around $10,000.
That's why I'm looking into the Stillen S/C right now...

Re: vortech supercharger
damn, 10K, come on, i have a vortech, and there is nothing, absolutely nothing extra needed that doesnt come with the kit to be safe, the only reason people are havnig problems, is that they dont have the correct tool to install the fuel lines properly, or they change pulleys, besides that there are no other issues with the kit. ive had mine for about 3 months now with no problems at all, its definetly the safest most reliable FI option out there right now. Belt dusting is normal in any application that uses a belt, and its no big deal if the pulleys are aligned. I havent seen one episode where a vortech belt is chewed up, thats ATI.

Re: vortech supercharger
Maybe KPierson or SMS can shed some light... I based my numbers on their past posts. FYI, I know someone who chewed up an entire belt within 1000 miles and had to install a second one. He's a 350Z owner in the Tampa area. Nice guy and very helpful to boot!

Re: vortech supercharger
Ok, conservatively figure $4500 for the kit itself plus $1500 for labor and first-rate tuning. Add another $750 installed for a nice wideband O2 and a boost gauge.

zimbo,
Your “conservative” math takes me to $6750, but what about the TS ECU? Isn’t that recommended to be used along with the Split Second piggy back for controlling the air/fuel ratio?
I thought you also wanted to add…
new fuel lines
high flow fuel pump
fuel regulator
an air/fuel gauge
more free flowing exhaust components
Again, I’m just beginning to look into FI and am leaning toward the Stillen Stage II kit due to the fact that the kit is sold as a “simple bolt on” and it comes with virtually no tune-ability AND is warranted for 3 years. I know Vortec seems to pull higher numbers on the dyno, but there was a dyno shoot out that showed the ATI, Vortec and Stillen all to be pretty darn close to each other over the rpm range.
I still have quite a bit of homework to do before I’d feel comfortable installing FI on my car, but at least I’m taking the time to do the research first…

Re: vortech supercharger
The Vortech kit includes fuel lines, fuel pump, and a fuel regulator. I already included the cost of an A/F gauge in my previous estimate.
The L-spec TS reflash is another $350, but it's certainly not a requirement. It simply increases the rev limit.
The Stillen SC is a fine choice.

I'll second that.. 10k is steep for a bolt on supercharger!
You get the kit installed and tuned for $6000.00 and you should be good to go. It is when you start changing belts and pulleys and trying to add more boost that you run into a ton of problems and $$$.
These kits are designed by engineers who put COUNTLESS hours into making sure things don't fall apart within 6 months. Vortech has always done a great job adapting kits to the VQ engine and this is no different.
tig488 - are you parting out your car?

Re: vortech supercharger
I agree about the price not being $10K. It's definitley up there though, I'd estimate around $6500 unless you find a barely used one! (Thanks esemes) The thing that gets you is that spending 100 here or 300 there or 400 there suddenly doesn't seem like such a big deal after you have 7-8K already in the car. I just put the kit on a month ago and now I'm ready to throw down another $1300 on a TC/VB upgrade combo. Should make things REALLY exciting after that. As far as the Stillen, I'd be concerned with installing something that you have no control of fuel delivery or timing. The hp shootout they did was with the Stillen s/c with the black box I believe, can you modify it based on adding exhaust and headers or plenum. Neffster, if you would like to talk about my f/i experience, feel free to pm me for my phone number or give me yours.
Re: vortech supercharger
$4,300 SC....$1350 install with gauges , Gauges $700 ....9lb pulley $60.....new serp belt $35....$250 fro dyno and tune........140whp added....well worth it . When you spend ...any where from $1500 to $3500 for headers and exhaust and get 20whp .The SC is the more bang for your buck
Couldnt afford it when young...gonna play when Im old
