It's probably because installing pulleys don't net much of a gain (if any) at all. They don't seem to be worth the time/money.

Pulleys do gain alot actually. Maybe not on a dyno, but when actually driving oh yea.

Re: no interest in pulley kits anymore?

I decided I am installing mine (single crank pulley) in the next couple weeks and will do the Blackstone oil analysis. I have read the great extensive thread as well as taking into account others who do have it, some with thousands of miles w/ it and will just do the oil analysis.

Hey, if the guys over at Horsepower TV on SpikeTV do it routinely on their car engine upgrades, I'm sure they do it for a purpose....lol This is not my determining factor but just something to consider...

Re: no interest in pulley kits anymore?

joe,
You're right on with your strategy, by performing oil analysis to manage the risk....however, I've caught the HP TV guys pitching the Tornado before so I wouldn't take everything they say as gospel. It's information, true, but all info should be tempered with your own research, studying the dissenting opinion. Seems like you've done that and you're at least an informed modder but those shows have sponsors and money talks.

Re: no interest in pulley kits anymore?

I've heard the term "crank walk" associated with pulleys. Anyone know what that is?

Hahaha. You don't even wanna go there. Do a search on google for "crankwalk" + "dsm"

Basically, the crank moves out of spec, engine goes bye bye. This was a notorious problem on 2nd generation turbocharged Mitsu Eclipse's. Thankfully, it never happened to my Eclipse.

Re: no interest in pulley kits anymore?

Based on my research, the consensus of opinion from folk who know a lot more about engines than I do (and have specific knowledge about the VQ35) is that aftermarket pulleys do not have the necessary harmonic dampener and transmit belt vibrations that over time will damage or do in the engine.

The downside risk is real and too high.

Re: no interest in pulley kits anymore?

Hmm but then oil tests and people who have had pulleys on the VQ since 1995 with over 100k on them now have had no problems. So your assumption is false.

Re: no interest in pulley kits anymore?

If there is any actual evidence that a VQ has failed from "belt vibrations" or anything related to a pulley then that would lend credibility to your statement. Otherwise "people who know alot about engines" are guessing or worse, theorizing about what they think might happen base on limited knowledge or information.

Re: no interest in pulley kits anymore?

My post did not contain assumptions. It contained information provided to me from people who know a lot more about VQ35 than I do, in fact three people who work on Nissan engines for a living. Independently, they all said the same thing.

My personal preference would be that pulleys had no adverse effect on the engine because it would present an avenue where a little more power could be squeezed out of my engine affordably.
