Hey guys, first I want to say I am fairly new here, I recently traded in my 01 Honda S2000 for my G35 and I must say that the G35 forum is great. Now, for the reason I am posting this thread, I as stated in the title have an 06 6mt with the revup engine that has 49k miles, I recently took it to the dealer to have a sound checked out that sounds like a belt tensioner/bearing rattle coming from the engine bay when driving. I spoke with the service advisor assigned to me and he typed up my car's vin# in his computer, he then informed me that the original owner brought the car in at 15k miles for a rattle under acceleration, the computer notes state that they drained the oil to find the engine had roughly half a quart of oil in it so they flushed the engine and filled it back up in which apparrently had solved the noise issue. My question is should this be considered a big deal? I have felt since I purchased the car that it doesnt have the power that some others I have seen on youtube and stuff have, I just chalked it up as I was stepping out of an s2k into a larger vehicle but now Im second guessing that assumption..I dont think the noise Im having is the same as it sounds like it may be coming from the belt area and its intermittent, they are already replacing my tranny this week for a noise they think they hear so its already been a rough transition to this car. I have researched the oil consumption problem which I would have thought this car would have since it was ran so low on oil but so far the oil level hasnt changed much. Im just pretty much wandering if I should be worried about engine damage from this incident and also if there should be any steps I should take to try to cover myself. I will be so upset if the engine goes right after my warranty is up because whoever had it before me couldnt check their oil. Any input would be appreciated and thanks again for everything guys!

yes, I will try to post a video of the noise tomorrow. I think the noise is kind of a belt tensioner. Im just more concerned of the info the dealer told me where the car has been ran down to half a quart of oil and was making a rattle from engine and all they did according to records was change the oil. Im just wandering if the car should be fine or not and if there are any steps I should take to protect me from being without a warranty and a blown engine on down the road. I do not necessarily hear any engine internal noises but just the belt or tensioner bad bearing noise like a high pitch chirping vibration noise at certain times..very intermittent.
Seems to me that the dealer would use that prior incident as reason NOT to honor any motor warranty claims. In other words, the dealer knows that the previous owner ran the motor low on oil which may have caused excess wear, and this is essentially the owner's fault and not something that could be claimed under warranty. Even if the motor did have oil consumption issues you likely wouldn't be able to claim that after the fact.

what if the oil consumption issue was EXACTLY why the oil was low. I mean I have heard some people complain that they have lost up to two quarts every 1k miles..
It very well could have been, but it sounds like no further action was taken after that incident. If the previous owner didn't press the issue then I'd guess you're SOL, because they wouldn't have done any followup to see if the engine was consuming excess amounts of oil and they could just chalk up the low oil to any number of excuses (simply normal usage after excessive miles between oil changes, incorrect amount of oil at last change, yada yada yada). I guess all I'm trying to say is that I don't think there is much you can do to protect yourself if the previous owner screwed the pooch. That's my experience with dealers talking, though. Maybe infiniti will be more sympathetic considering the oil consumption issue.

well thanks for the input, Ims upposed to be having the oil consumption test done as im still under warranty but to me its not burning a ton of oil. im just wandering if there is any tale tale signs of damage from the low oil I could notice. Im hoping its ok sinsce nothing besides an engine flush and oil change is noted in computer and the issue seems to have not went any further with previous owner. I dont hear any horrific emgine noise and its been 30k miles since the apparrent issue..
