Another weird noise thread

Okay so I've looked around and I can't seem to find a thread that matches the sounds I'm hearing exactly. I'm just wanting to get a quick opinion to see whether or not I should take my car into a shop.

I have an 03 5AT, and whenever I drive hard and hit about 4k+ RPM, I hear a noise coming from the front of the car. The best way to describe the noise is that it sounds like some metal shims in a blender. It's kind of a rattling noise, but sounds more like tiny metal pieces moving around.

Any clues what this could be? Is it something I should just take it into a shop and have them figure out?

Hmm it's odd, I just noticed it recently but I really don't know how long it's been going on

Noise sounds like Detonation/Knocking

What fuel are you using?

Do you have any mods?

When was the last time you checked your spark plugs?

I wouldn't be taking the engine to that RPM with that noise. Check it out before continuing.

Usually cheap gas and high/advanced timing causes that to happen.

I always use premium unleaded. All I have done is springs and shocks and nothing else.

What do you think the noise could be even though I'm using the best gas and no other mods?

I have never checked my spark plugs (haven't had the car very long). Could this be the problem?

The sound you are referring to can be the following:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine_knocking

http://repairpal.com/what-is-engine-knocking

Other potentials

Defective main crankshaft bearings
A cracked or broken flywheel or flex-plate that attaches the engine to the transmission
A worn water pump bearing
A failed or loose timing belt tensioner can knock when the timing belt slaps against it
An air conditioning compressor can knock when it is failing or icing up
An alternator with worn rotor bearings can knock when the pistons fire

I really favor knocking if that is not the case, I would look into water pump (should your car be overheating or leaking water)

and worst case scenario it could be a Rod knock.

This is what rod knock sounds like

only gets louder with the rev's/

Ahh thanks a bunch for that post man. My car doesn't sounds like that youtube video at all. It's much more faint and like I said sounds like tiny metal pieces moving around quickly. I'm going to read into those site and let you know. Hopefully I can figure out what it is!

It sounds very similar to this, but it happens when at high RPMs, not immediately after like this video.

This was the closest thing I could find that is even remotely close. It's pretty faint.

I'm probably just going to end up taking it to the dealer and explain the weird rattling sound and see what they can do.

klver...

Just thought of something...

Have you tried revving the car to 3k rpm (while engine is warm)

Then turn OFF the a/c if you hear the noise dissapear it can be the a/c compressor/clutch.

I once had that problem.

Haven't had a chance to mess with the car as far as running without the A/C on, but I just watched this video and it sounds almost EXACTLY like my problem.

How can I fix this? What exactly is causing it?

Thanks again man.

that video is engine knock....

If that's what you are getting PULL the plugs immediately check for detonation. If you are detonating check the compression of the cylinders that is a serious problem.

You don't have a check engine light?

No light at all. Should there be a light if that's the case?
