Where to hardwire a radar detector

Where exactly shoud I tap into to power a Passport 8500 in my G35 Coupe. Is there an open fuse slot that is hot only when the ignition is on.
Thanks

Re: Where to hardwire a radar detector

I just spliced the wire off the cigarette lighter to hard-wire my V1. There aren't any hot-w/ignition empty fuse slots in the interior fuse box, but I didn't check the ones under the hood.

I used the fuse slot to the left of the cigarette lighter fuse for my V1. Look the the fuse cover and you'll know which on that is. I think that whole top row is hot, i only tested that slot though.

Not sound ignorant, but how do you run the wire to the fuse box? I have a V1 also, and I was about to post on how you guys wired it. Any pics?? I want to run the wire behind the dash, but anywhere unvisible would be cool. V1 comes with a wire tap so that you can hit a hot wire dosen't it.

Re: Where to hardwire a radar detector

The good thing about the passport 8500, is that the remote display is built into the lighter socket. Heres how i installed mine.

go to radio shack and buy a telephone line extender. Then just mount you detector high up on the windsheild and plug in the telephone wire. Then route the telephone wire through the ceiling panel, down the drivers side a-piller, down through the door trim, and under the floor mats. Then you plug the other end of the telephone wire into your existing factory passport adapter. There is a cigarrete plug right next to the center console on the drivers side. Plug it in there and hide all the excess wires. This way, you can have a clean install and still use the remote display which is pretty concealed if you ask me. Right next to the drivers knee. I'll post pics later.

Re: Where to hardwire a radar detector

Thanks for the advice..I will either mount it really low and run the wire on the very back of the dash and down to the floor and over to the cig lighter or high and through the ceiling as you suggested..

Re: Where to hardwire a radar detector

I wouldn't recommend mounting it low. I also have a V1, and I've read pretty much everything there is to read on the V1 website. Mike Valentine has a whole tech article about why mounting it high on the windshield greatly reduces the warning distance.

Mount it high. Better reception.

I just have a battery operated unit (BEL) clipped to the passenger visor. Works great ! - No cords.

Re: Where to hardwire a radar detector

I tapped my detector into the power of the dimming mirror. Been 3 months with no problems, & it was VERY easy!!

Re: Where to hardwire a radar detector

Be real careful!! I too have a Passport 8500 and I purchased the highwire kit for $30.00. What we did is tap into the 12V port on the passenger side of my coupe. We then (very, very carefully) removed the glove box and surroundings dash. The problem is, you must unplug the glove box light and the connector for the airbags. When I reinstalled it, my warning lamp and Nav System were going crazy. I had to take it to the dealer and have them reset everything. Luckily, the waived the labor but they did say normally the charge. Long story short, what ever you do, do not unplug anything!

Re: Where to hardwire a radar detector

I ran it to my Lighter on the passenger side, but the wire will not stay behind the dashbprd. I will take pics when I get home.

Re: Where to hardwire a radar detector

Really? My buddy did mine (semi-pro installer) and you can not see any wire until it pops up from the center of the dash to the unit. My unit is a little low on the window, but reception still appears to be pretty good. Unfortunately, I do not have a digital camera to post pics of the end result.

Re: Where to hardwire a radar detector

Yours runs under the dashboard right? Mines is not under the dash, it runs along the back of the dash. I f I could get it to stay there I would be fine. We'll see.
