Re: Where to hardwire a radar detector

Actually no, we ran it all the way around. We took off the lower glove box, all of the paneling underneath (don't unplug the airbag or you'll need to make a trip to the dealer) and around the windows ran the wire up through there, then around the top off the dash to where the unit is mounted (just above the outside temp gauge.

The guy that did it for me is very meticulous in the things he does. It really looks very clean. The only down side to how we wired it is you lose access to the control unit on the end of the passport adaptor, but I could care less abut that. If you're in the Tampa Bay area let me know and you can check it out.

I think mine may be wired the same way, I just need to get the wire to stay behind the dash. Ahhhh! I too am very meticulous.

Re: Where to hardwire a radar detector

Hi,

I hardwired my detector right to the lower fuse box by the emergeny brake. it was really easy. I have a Sedan. I learned a trick from an old friend in the biz. I splice the cig lighter wire and find the hot lead, usually a white stripe down the wire. I strip a 1/2" section of the insulation off and open the fuse box. I then remove a 15 or 20 A fuse from the box, usually the radio. Then I find a screw or hole in the frame and strip the ground wire and attach it to that so it's well grounded. Then I ran the coil cig lighter wire up the side door sill between the dash and ran it up to where the dash meets the glass in the lower left corner. mounted my detector to the glass withthe suction cups, attached the wire, turned on the car and voila! It works! Even with the Radio off power is still supplied to the fuse so it always has power with the accessory mode on the ignition!

Re: Where to hardwire a radar detector

Tapping into the mirror location is probably the best location. I have owned two V1, and wouldn't consider any other. They have saved by butt so many times.
Took my previous car to a professional installer to connect to the mirror location. Did you do it yourself, or take it elsewhere to have it done?

Only problem with tapping into the mirror is that you can't hook up the remote display of the V-1. I think that you have to use a full wire to do that.

yup, no reason to tap power from mirror if you are using the remote display.

Re: Where to hardwire a radar detector

I disassembled the sunroof control, map light control and tapped into the sunroof power wire, then ran the power cord out through a small hole drilled in the sunglass holder. When I'm not using it I just retract in into the sunglass holder. Otherwise, it will pull out to plug in my V1 on the visor or suction cupped to the windshield.

BTW - does anyone have any experience with the new cordless Solo2?

Re: Where to hardwire a radar detector

For the people running a V1 up high without a remote unit, how's the visibility of the arrows lights? I may get the remote unit anyway so I can tuck the detector behind the passenger side of the overhead light unit, just so I don't have to rip it down if I'm stopped by the cops for some other reason (like not having a front license plate).

Re: Where to hardwire a radar detector

Why would you guys feel afraid when a police sees your radar? isn't it a legal device ?

It is legal in all states but 2. Most people are just uneducated and don't know the difference.

Re: Where to hardwire a radar detector

They're not legal in Canada either. Two other issues: #1: cops are less likely to give you break if they see the detector, such as if you're pulled over for something non-radar-related, like running a stop sign, but also speeding. It indicates a frequent and intentional disregard for traffic regulations. #2: At night, if people can see the bright lights from your detector, some will crowd you in order to share your protection. I don't like that. It makes it much harder to safely change lanes if I've got people moving at high speed behind me, and looking in my rearview is painful with all those headlights on me.

For the record, mine is clipped to the passenger-side visor, with an invisible wire running to the fusebox in the driver's side kickpanel. I got an extra fuse at Radio Shack and plugged it in right next to the cigarette lighter (I think). It only turns on with the ignition. The remote display is velcroed just above the cigarette lighter. The wire from that runs in the groove under the steering column, then down through the hole where the height adjustment latch is, then to the fusebox. You can probably see it in one of my Rides section pictures, although I've got an accelerometer with a power cord hanging out uglying it up. I want to put the detector further forward in that niche behind the roof center console, but I can't for the life of me get the suction cups to stick for longer than 20 minutes. You'd have to really be looking for it to find it there.
