engine re-build
engine re-build
Newb question.
I need to rebuild my motor(pistons and such)
anyone have an idea of what it would cost in parts to build up the bottom end and what do you recommend for N/A build?
What brand piston rings and all the goodies?
Now my main concern is..I live in Cali would building the bottom end cause me to fail SMOG?

I was only focusing on getting a low-mile long block..except another member sparked my curiosity to do a build up and go N/A...I won't be paying labor and have no idea how much that will cost..the reason why I am asking the experts here.
You don't need to do anything at all to "go NA." It's already NA from the factory. It means "Naturally Aspirated," as opposed to "FI," or "Forced Induction" (supercharged or turbocharged).
^^ wow, he's an expert....
If you build the motor, what exactly will you be looking to do? stroke it out? higher compression pistons? DIfferent cams? Better oil pump? Better springs?
It all depends on what you are going to be doing in the direction that people are going to tell you to go.
If you are going to stay NA or if you are going to go FI ever makes a difference as well. How much you are willing to spend to do the build is important.
You could stroke/bore, higher compression pistons, different cams, 5 angle valve job, Stronger springs, better oil pump - then you could Rev the car out to 8000 rpm or so and make more NA power. However, you'll probably want to go FI if you get that deep into it because of costs.

how much do you have to spend? if i was going to do a n/b build i put my budget approx 6g's plus

You won't really get more hp out of a bottom end unless you increase the displacement. Higher compression pistons will help torque but you'll have to make sure you retune and make sure it's not too high.
to really make a NA motor shine, you're going to need a really good set of heads and careful cam selection. On top of all the other supporting mods like headers, Y, catback, high flow cats, intake manifold mods and finally a tune. That's not chump change.
I don't know what I'd do though. Probably find the best used oem low miler motor you can and run all your bolt ons and tune. Then run a 3.5 or 3.7 rear
