Oil Oil Oil Gahh!

So i keep checking my oil cuz im scared ****less of oil consumption. I know my car is losing oil someway, but how much i dont know.

The dipstick is 24mm from H to L marks. If there are 5 quarts in the oil pan, then 24 / 5 = 4.8mm = 1QT Low on oil. Some where i was told that 8mm is 1/3QT low??

Now Im totally lost, id say im about 3mm low on the dipstick from the H marker. Does the dipstick only represent certain amount like 3QTs or am i crazy?

2005 5AT with 80xxx miles. Ive found what i was looking for, so ill share it lol.

24MM on the dipstick = 1QT. So the dipstick doesnt count the whole 5QTs just 1. So if your halfway down id say add 1/2QT oil and call it done.

well.. according to warranty/tech/etc.. it's "normal" to lose anything UNDER a quarter every 1000 miles.. but personally.. i think a quart OR LESS every 3000 miles is somewhat normal..

It also depends on how you drive.

The higher revs and downshifting will increase oil consumption.

My original REVUP motor would normally be down less than 20mm every 3k. When I started tracking it, I would be down 12mm+ in less than 1k.

Oil

When I first purchase my coupe '05, and after about 12-15k I started complaining about my car burning oil - (I was adding oil weekly) - Concerned, the dealer started conducted tests, and eventually replaced my engine. After about a month, same problem - replaced the engine again, and somewhere in there the tranny was also replaced - Of course by this time, I'm thinking lemon law, new car time since it's been about 3-4 times that these guys have dealt with this issue. Then while they were conducting the oil test (every few days I'd come in and they would check my oil, and keep a record of consumption), one of my tires went bad, and I had to drive on the doughnut for about a week until my new tire arrived. During that time my car was burning oil regularly. That's when they determined that there was nothing wrong with my car.

Of course I didn't agree, because I was driving very differently while on the doughnut, so I asked my service rep straight up, who I am very cool with: "I don't really want a new car, because mine is broken in the way I want it, but I don't want a lemon either. Is there something really wrong with my car"? He said: "Honestly, you're not going like my answer, but really there's nothing wrong with your car, normally he wouldn't have replaced the tranny, but because it was me, he did. He said that I just drive to damn fast...if you're running your car at 100mph++, you will burn a lot of oil... These car engines are based simlar to a race car. High performance engine, and like race cars, if you run them hard, you will burn a lot of oil. There's a strip of road leading to my house that even grandma rolls at 80, so it's normal for me to hit 100+ on a regular. Armed with this info, I determine they were correct, if I drive normally, my oil burns normal.

I know, I know long explanation to just say slow down, and you will burn less oil.

........This isn't new news, it only requires two hands and a flashlight to find the hole! I love the new '08+ models where the dip stick is right in front, I could find that hole in the dark using braille.

just feel for the hole with one finger when you feel a wet spot put your stick in with the other hand. You cant miss it no flash light needed.

most oil consumption motors will burn oil quickly and in large amounts. In most of the ones I've seen covered under warranty, they'll drop at or below the L level on the dip stick after about 1500-2000 miles from a fresh oil change. If you measure your oil and you're 3/4 of the way between the H and L marks on the stick, after 3000 miles, you're OK. If you're at half, I'd start to keep a close eye on it. If you're less than that, you're consuming oil and pretty much the issue will only get worse from there on from what I've seen.

But wouldn't driving conditions play a part (speeding, stop and go..etc.)?
