consuming oil

2004 G35 coupe 5AT 95k consuming oil.. its either a piston ring, head gasket, or valve seals.. Don't know weather it should be repaired or i should look for a used motor.. Doesn't feel right just throwing the motor out.. lol What you guys think.. Will any basic mechanic be able to repair it? Average cost of used motor or repair? im in ny btw..

How much oil is it consuming. Have you tried thicker oil?

normally rings. you can re-ring the motor. master gasket kit is like $400 from the dealer plus rings and bearings and labor. you might come out equal as if you went with a used motor and labor to install, only you will pretty much have a new motor.

should try thicker oil first. Forget additives. Oil is already formulated properly by adding additives your changing how it was engineered to work

Lucas is just a very thick petroleum oil without additives. It's okay for oil burning, but overkill to use just for "consuming oil". Lucas could resurrect dead motor from extremely worn piston rings.

Any updates to your situation? I think I'm headed down the same path. Did you get any quotes? What action did you take?

I'm right there with you guys. 105k and oil burning seems to be getting worse. The rest of the car is mint, so it doesn't make sense to get rid of it.

The odd thing is that my car doesn't ever smoke, but I am using probably 1 qt every 1000 miles. I know I need new valve covers, but I can't imagine this could be the cause of this kind of oil use.

What are our options?

rebuild or replace - or you can just keep adding oil until it gets to the ridiculous point.

Use super thick 30 or 40 weight oil.
