Issue with Oil filter

I just got an oil change done at Firestone. I took my own oil and filter and just wanted change it for me. They used my oil but they refused to use the filter and used their own. The said they cannot use my filter unless its Nissan. They
used a Firestone p/n TF2876
I did the research and found out Firestone p/n TF2876 is a Puralator plus L14612 filter or Equivalent. On Puralator web site it should be L14610 for G35.

I looked up for the difference at the Puralator web site and found this

http://ecat.arvinmeritor.com/smartlink/?partnum=L14610

http://ecat.arvinmeritor.com/smartlink/?partnum=L14612

Basically both filters are the same except L14612 is about 0.6" smaller in length (2.93" vs.3.52")

Is it going to be OK to leave the filter they installed in there, I think its made for smaller cars, i checked and found it can be used for Sentra.
So I am concerned now what should I do. What are my choices? I basically bought my own filter to make sure I have a quality filter and now I am stuck with the insurance crap from the firestone person and do not want to have the engine be effected adversly.

Thanks for your input.

Your fine IMO, I looked it up too, and everything including the filter media is the same size. I think they made the smaller filter in fit in a tighter area. Since all the other specs, ie presure ext. are the same your fine!

Re: Issue with Oil filter

Dream on. The are some really bad oil filters sold in US.
While Nissan oem is not the absolute best for extreme longevity, it is more than adequate when changed at the recommended 90 day or 3,750 mile increment............beyond that interval you need a larger size.

Don't be fooled by case size as some small oil filter medium is installed in a larger case size.

Luckily the G35 engine has relatively large main bearing oil clearance size 0.0012" so less critical compared to say an older Q45 with 0.0007".

Which just begs the old aged question that advertising careers are made from <font color=green>"what is the best oil filter to use?"</font color=green>

Considering that most people like to change their oil every 5,000 miles, regardless of the factory recommendations, and you say they only last 3,750 miles. Whats a poor G-owner to do?
No wonder synthetic oil is recommended, it's a waste of money.

Issue with Oil filter

Well, one thing I found out about the Nissan oil filters (just like Honda ones) is that they have the anti drainback valve inside of them. This supposedly leaves the filter with most of it's capacity full so that when you crank up you get oil much quicker and don't start dry for those few secs. I use synthetic but change it every 7500 miles. I finally got my Blackstone kit to see if I need to change it sooner.

It's all about da G.......

Q45Tech,
I go 5,000 miles between oil changes on Mobile1 Synthetic with nissan filters. What do you recommend i use instead of the regular nissan filter?
Thanks!

Re: Issue with Oil filter

Also I heard PureOne is good too, Its about $6 at Pepboys.
I read about it at the Oil study.
http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html
Just avoid Fram filters

Btw, Anyone has changed the oil filter themselves on G35?
How much room is there for the Filter to fit?
I checked another premium filter mfr.Hasting
http://catalog.hastingsfilters.com/

and they also have a very small stubby filter (LF113), they do mention the longer version (LF240) but for G35 only smaller is given. Funny for Maxima 2003 its the longer version which means there might be a clearance issue with G35 and that sucks, seem like a bad design??

There is adequete room for a larger filter to fit but with the car being as low as it is and in some cases lower, I would worry more about damaging a larger filter, more than if it fits. I'm going to be installing a fumuto drain valve on my next oil change and I believe it may just have enough "comfort level" clearance to the road. In the future, if I lower my vehicle, I may worry a bit more. As for the plans of a oil pan spacer kit, we shall see after I lower the car.

A possible solution is a remote filter location, high enough to be saved from road rash. Hell, lets go extreme, and do a dry sump kit with remote dual filters and never have to change our synthetic oils.

Re: Issue with Oil filter

AltaLad,

So the shorter filter for G35 is because its too low to the ground especially in case you end up lowering the car.
I guess then maxima must be taller?? because for the same year Maxima model they have 3/4" longer filter.

Re: Issue with Oil filter

The oil filter is mounted horizontally, so I don't think length is the issue.
