2005x burning oil

i have a 2005 X with 81k miles...i got 5/16 spacer z tube and rev up air box with kn drop in filter..megan racing resonated test pipes with a m2 g37 y pipe and megan oers exhaust system with an osiris uprev tune..i just started noticing about a month ago that on cold starts the car would smoke alot and once warmed up it would be less...and sometimes if i floor from a stop it will puff some smoke..ive checked me oil levels and have added about a 1/2 a quart with about 1500 miles on my oil change..if i do a catch can new pcv valve change spark plugs and if need be put new valve covers on..could this help my problem..i was thinking of maybe change to a thicker oil next oil changce such as a 10w30 instead of the 5w30 i use now..i use full synthetic amsoil 5w30

You have test pipes. They always burn smoke under WOT. The VQ motor has alot of blow by with the oil so i would say just check your 5 and 6 spark plugs.

If they have oil in them, replace and valve covers too. If they are clean, new PCV and catch can if your paranoid like me.

But yes it will fix your problem once you know exactly where the issue is. Good luck.

Oil consumption is for most people the valve covers. Specifically the coil pack/spark plug tube seals/rings. Only way to tell is if your spark plugs are covered with oil. Ita not hard to check but takes alot of time if you have never done it before.

I'm mechanically retarded, but I did it myself in about an hour.

My valve covers where fine, but I could see oil start to get over the seals. So far so good lol *crosses finger*.

And even if you needed new valve covers the install price is like 1000-1200 depending where you go. Those are actualy Infiniti dealer prices though.

join the club. the above wasnt my problem. im using almost 2 qts in like 1200 miles. started doing the smoking after i put the test pipes on. i think the better flow/less restriction from adding the test pipes along with the full exhaust and spacer doesnt help with a motor with highER miles. and mine is just almost at 71k, been doin it since like 66k. and yes, im building a motor....3k in and not even done.

Leaky valve covers and plug seal do result in oil leaking out of the valve cover and sometimes into the plug valley, but the oil leaking from them areas is not entering the engine.

Oil consumption on these motors is due to weak piston rings. Nissan uses a soft ring to reduce internal friction and improve ecomony. It bit them in the butt though because the rings were a bit too weak and caused oil consumption.

As for test pipes and oil consumption, yes, there is a definitely a link. Why do some VQs with TPs burn oil? I really don't know, but it's been documented on this site and my350z. The fix? Put the cats back on and the car stops burning oil.

If you're consuming oil at greater than 1 QT every 3K miles, then you've probably got a ring problem.

it's pretty crazy when you take a motor apart and see what is really happening when you have a oil consumption issue.. If I remember I'll takes some pics tomorrow.
