Pep Boys velocity stack
Pep Boys velocity stack
I was at Pep boys today and saw this velocity stack

Decided to make my own Revupish air box except bigger (bigger is better, right?
). Haven't driven it too much yet but it does feel a little snappier coming off idle.

I beveled the edge of the stack so that it seats into the v-stack and then ran a bead of rtv in the remaining gap. I'll keep an eye on it to see how it is holding up, but it is in there pretty good and I am pretty confident the rtv will stay put. If I like how it runs I'll probably rivet some aluminum straps between the stack and the airbox. I'll have to do some logging and see were the af is now and how it is pulling.
seems to me that it would negatively affect laminar airflow... and possibly impede flow altogether (you are limiting the volume of the chamber and impeding the path the air is designed to take from the duct).
Maybe, depends on how much air is scavenged from behind the filter. I did consider this and is why I shaved off the lip on the open box side. Not sure how much turbulence would be caused pulling the air from behind the stack over that edge. My working premise is that the bulk of the charge comes straight through the K&N and into the stack if that's true the charge should be clean and a bit compressed. Not trying to sell anything here just messing around in the garage.
I wish I would have done some logging before I installed it, I don't have any logs since I made a "Z-Tube" out of my AEM CA. To see what it is doing I'll have to log and then take it out. Butt dyno says it didn't hurt...

I'm sure he's working off this theory:

But a few problems.
1) He didn't match up the opening size. If it fits inside the oem one, I'd say it's smaller.
2) He had to cut up the stack to fit. Not sure how that affects anything.
3) Not as clean of an install as I'd like to see.
4) The gif is a stack vs no stack. Here it's bigger/cut stack vs oem small stack.
But it was cheap enough. In for the opinions.

@ #1 I.D.s are the same, I chamfered the edge so that it seats into the bell of the original v-stack
2-4 are spot on
, I did clean up the throat after the pic.
