Oil Change With Ramps?

Doing first oil change. I don't own ramps and don't want to waste money. Will ramps provide enough clearance for me to get to the oil filter and drain plug?

P.S. This was not a problem on my SUV : )

Re: Oil Change With Ramps?

yes, i use ramps all the time when i change oil on my cars... although i do not own a G yet but the only clearence issue would be the ramps hitting the front bumper on the way up.

If that clears, you should have enough room to do your oil change.

Yes with the coupe you will most definitely need ramps. And, you will need ramps with extensions. I got a set from Griots Garage with the extension kit that work nicely, provided to backstop them so that they don't scoot when attempting to get on them.

Note, the Sears Craftsman "low clearance" ramps will not work.

I use ramps with my sedan and clearance is not an issue. The ramps I got are available from Discount Auto or AutoZone.

Re: Oil Change With Ramps?

Just curious on peoples thoughts with ramps. Do they slope the car too much as to not let all of the old oil drain? I am wondering how much could be left in there since the car is not level on the ramps. Thoughts?

Re: Oil Change With Ramps?

you would still need to let the under panel flip down to get the filter out without a mess.

flip down? Is this a feature of the underbody panel on the coupe? With my sedan, I've got to remove all 14 bolts and the shield to get to my oil filter.

Re: Oil Change With Ramps?

I use the rhino ramps with my sedan and they work great. They are plastic so they are really light weight. Picked them up at the old Wal Mart for $30.

Re: Oil Change With Ramps?

I never looked at the bottom of a Sedan, but on the coupe under tray thing theres a crease. I just take off about 7 or 8 bolts and let half of the panel flip down at that crease.

Re: Oil Change With Ramps?

Just picked up some Rhino ramps today. Unfortunately have to wait a few days for the K&N oil filter as nobody had them in stock. : (

Re: Oil Change With Ramps?

It would have killed them to put an access panel on the undertray wouldn't it?

Re: Oil Change With Ramps?

That's so they can charge you more labor at the dealership for simple things.

For instance, the accessory belt on a Buick Park Avenue goes around one of the motor mounts.. so you practically have to drop the engine to change the belt.

New accessory belt: $20
Labor to drop the engine to install it: $250
Being the engineer who got the bonus check for designing it that way: Priceless.
