Supercharge or Turbo?

I'm a new member to the site and forum. I need advice on a couple of things. First , I'm looking to purchase a used G35 Coupe. Is there a considerable difference between the ( performance etc ) 2002, 2003, models? Also, is it possible to Supercharge or turbo charge the engine?

Thanks,
cantdo55

It's possible to do anything you want for engine mods with some pros / cons of each. Yeah, there are people on here that have gone the FI route. Do a search and find out what people are running. There are no major differences between the '03 and '04 coupes.

Here's a useful link on FI differences between S/C & Turbos:

Why don't you check out the FI forum on this website or the larger one on my350z.com? Whoever told you that probably also thought the G35 was a FWD Maxima spin-off as well.

Turbo - Need more knowledge, more tuning, more $$$, more time, more maintenance.... more likely to blow your engine if not careful.

Stillen - Moderate power gain, tons of torque only FI offering engine warranty, no known problems, ugly unit, ugly tubing, disgusting hood design. HEY STILLEN! Make a new hood for crying out loud.

Procharger - Unofficially retired after about 10 blown engines from here and 350Z forums around. Sounds ridiculous, like grinding a soda can in a turbo juice mixer.... but louder.

Vortech - Good power gain, decently priced, some problems but with proper tuning seems very reliable. Sounds like Procharger but not as bad. I think this is the best choice for now both power/economic/aesthetic wise.

If you want some extar power, a supercharger.

But if you don't have the car yet, why don't you try it out as a N/A and go from there.

There are N/A boring kits that'll bring it to like 4.2 liters.

Wink

there is no such thing as a "N/A" kit. i think you may be referring to bolt-on products, such as intake, exhuast, pulleys, headers, cat-delete pipe, etc. the combination of all bolt-on products will not gain you what you will start with by doing forced induction. however, adding bolt on parts that are compatible with either turbo or supercharger will realize more horsepower than bolting on a FI unit by itself. for the time being, there are no superchargers that are manufactured, or recommended (modified to fit) G35 coupe auto's, except the Stillen unit.

forced induction, our experience:

turbo: biggest power gains (potential), difficult, but very do-able installation, more efficient than supercharger. does not wear on your motor all the time, because you do not have to be in boost all the time. also, does not use the turbo all the time for the same reason.

supercharger: good power gains, but no tuneability after changing out the pulley. easier install than turbo. not as efficient. uses your motor and supercharger all the time, which means more wear on both. cheaper than turbo.

if you plan to go turbo, do not install aftermarket headers, as the tubo kit will come with exhuast manifolds. exhaust manifolds will replace the stock headers. your factory or aftermarket intake will be obsolete at that point as well. in terms of realizing the most potential out of the turbo, it's wise to go with a true dual exhaust system (borla, injen, greddy) because they eliminate the y-pipe, and have piping diameter at either 3", or close to it. also, elimitating the cats will allow exhaust to exit quicker, thereby allowing more horsepower too. with turbo, there is no such need for backpressure. for example, we have a 5" exhaust from the turbo back on our racecar. it makes 1453 hp, at the wheels (1700 crank). and yes, it's street driven w/ full interior, a/c, power steering, stereo, and 10 pt chromoly roll cage.

if you plan to go supercharged, atleast buy an exhaust, and preferrably a true dual. stillen recommends keeping the factory headers and catalytic converters for their sc, so if you go stillen, keep this in mind. cams and pulley's are recommended to remain stock, although, i know people that have used them and made it work.

summary: we're a comapany that builds very high horsepower, street driven, turbocharged cars. if you want to realize the most horsepower, go turbo. superchargers are great though too. there is a good argument that superchargers are more user friendly, and less of a hassle. while this may be true, for the most part, they are also being used almost 100% of the time, which wears on the supercharger itself, and the motor.

hope this helps.

The so called N/A boring kit that was referenced is the AEBS Stroker kit. It esentially bores out the VQ35DE to around 4.3L and adds new, stronger, forged parts such as the sleeves, pistons, crankshaft, and rods. I think the one drawback to this kit is that it will be upwards of $7k. Not cheap. But definitely a very good alternative to going FI. You can check this out.

What about the HKS Rotrex Supercharger, heard any comments from the z guys? The package seems more complete compare to the other s/c available. HKS has 2 xtra inj., oil cooler and v-pro included. It should be coming out soon for the G.
