Stupid Gas Tank Issue

So I'm driving my beautiful 2007 G35 and notice my gas is running low. My gas light is on and everything. I go the the gas station to fill up. Shortly after hitting 12.75 gallons on the gas pump the tank stops filling? Then when I look at the needle it only shows two ticks below full. I tried pumping in more gas and it keeps turning off the pump. I tried turning the nozzle 45 degrees to the side and still turns off. It even got to the point where fuel poured out of the tank nozzle. Since owning this used vehicle I could never get this car to reach Full.
So here are my questions:
If my gas light came on but only took 12 gallons why would the reading be so far off? I thought this car has a 20 gallon tank?
I have heard of shutter valves and fuel sending units that can be the issue. Could it be a defective tank? How much are we looking to fix this? The car is out of warranty.
I would appreciate feedback, experiences and advice with this issue. Thanks guys!!!

Might just be the floater arm in the tank is stuck... not sure how common that is. I'd say that's one of the easier things to fix if it's in fact the problem. Might be worth just taking out your back seat and going in to take a look. It's pretty easy- even I can do it. Depressurize the tank first by taking the cap off... back seat comes off... there's a cover and about 7-8 screws... An O ring that you may have to replace if you remove it... a couple of plug ins... and then the pump bucket is there... will probably float right out on you. The floater arm will get caught up and prevent you from taking it right out. But you'll be able to get a good view as to whether or not your tank is full and whether or not the arm moves freely.
That's the one on the passenger side anyway- I'm pretty sure there's a floater arm of some description on the driver side too- but no fuel pump to deal with.
I'm pretty new to working on any of my own problems but even I got that one sorted out pretty quickly.

There's a recall on this. ITB08-041A
Car might still be in warranty so I say let the dealer fix it.
Had this done on my 06. They replaced the Fill limit vent cover.
Will cost you a few hundred if you're out of warranty.

When removing the rear seat is it a two man operation? Also, does the whole seat come out as one piece or in several. Also, Where am I unbolting the seat? Finally, is the fuel sensor that easy to remove and replace?

just pull up on the front of the seat no bolts

If there's a recall check that option first. Seat just pulls up- all as one section. Need to lift forward and up at the same time. Held in with two clips I think it is. Once you get under there you just quarter turn four caps and then theres your fuel pump connections. Under that is your fuel tank.
Might be worth looking up the Factory service manual on here - that's what I did. Just do a search I think a link for it is in the diy section.

This is a very common issue, both of my personal G35s have done it. It just doesn't vent the air out as fast as the pump is putting fuel in when it gets close to full. You can avoid it by just setting the pump nozzle on the lowest setting.

There was a 'flapper valve' problem that caused this - I think there was a TSB or recall, basically it doesn't allow you to fill much above halfway before it shuts.
I currently have this on two of mine and it makes me crazy.

I had the same problem with filling up but also my fuel needle would constant go down abit and then back up. That was just so annoying lol! I wasn't sure if I had a 1/4 tank or empty!
Anyways, the floaters were cleaned and no problems now.
