DIY - Starter Replacement

A few weeks ago my starter went out on me, I got a used one for $50 at a junk yard (~$200 brand new). and as i came back to my car i realized that i didnt know where the thing was -_- so this DIY is going to show you how to remove the starter on a late 2003 G35 coupe.

Project Time?
1st time - took me n hour
2nd time - I'm quite confident i could get this done in less than 15 minutes, its disgustingly easy.

Tools Needed?
Jack w/ Jackstands or A Lift
Phillips Screwdriver
Ratchet
10mm bit
14mm bit
10mm wrench
Small breaker bar(optional)

Step 1
Locating the Thing!
These were taken from https://g35driver.com/forums/engine-...r-located.html

it is on the driver side under the headers (you can see it in this pic)
those two cylindrical things are starter and solenoid, or in a same location but on a pass side, depends on what engine you got.

Apparently it depends on the year which side it is located on, the picture posted is an EARLY 03 (Manual fan) and its on the drivers side. If your car has electric fans and is RWD it *should* be on the passenger side, right behind the alternator.

The AC compressor is on the driverside, which the starter would be located behind if it were: Early 03 (manual fan), HR, or G35X.

Step 2
Disconnect the battery
-the negative terminal will do
-always roll down the windows before disconnecting the battery

Step 3
Jack your G up
-Roll your G to flat ground
-please use jackstands, if you dont have them and ABSOLUTELY need to continue this process, throw on the handbrake and make sure a wheel is underneath the rotor in the event the jack gives out.

Step 4
Remove the Trim underneath
-only the side you're working on needs to be disconnected
-2 10mm bolts/screws(I forget) will need to be disconnected

Step 5
Disconnect power harness
Name: IMG_1296.jpg
Views: 11286
Size: 115.4 KB

Step 6
Disconnect second wire(ground?)
-Using your 10mm bit loosen the bolt about a quarter turn, as you will see, its already a pain getting the ratchet in there(due to those two metal lines) so if you loosen it more, you wont be able to get the ratchet out. so loosen it a quarter turn just so you can take a wrench to it.

-hold rubber sock back w/ a finger and unscrew the 10mm bolt

-place the shielded line somewhere safe, I dont know if this is a hot lead or ground(and i was in to much of a hurry to pull out my multimeter) so I just put it up against a rubber area

Step 7
Disconnect the Starter From the Vehicle
-Unscrew the two 14mm bolts, they are a pain in the *** and i was about to get my breaker bar to undo these. but they are do-able with just a ratchet!

-Remove the starter(a lot of twisting and turning is required) it is a tight fit getting it in and out but you can do it. and when installing the new one, try to insert it in the same direction that you removed it.
-When replacing the starter in its hole, if it doesnt fit in all the way, pull it out and turn the little gear just a bit. I never had a problem with it, but the teeth may have to be lined up with the flywheel.

Installation is the exact opposite of removal. Just have patience and you will have a running car again in no time!!! If you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer them!

Nice write up. A picture of the actual starter motor would have been cool to see. Perhaps lay the unit next to a ruler that way us newbies can get an idea on the size of this thing and what it actually looks like for this car.

100% agree. I found it no problem when I was 16 and under the influence lol.

OP what is the reason for rolling the windows down before disconnecting the battery?

I think this DIY is from a 350z or coupe: For those, as the door don't have a frame over the windows, when you open the door, the windows has to lower 0.5 inch to be able to open without breaking anything... without battery the windows wont do down if you have to open or close the door ;-)
