Just replace the Valve Cover Gaskets to be safe, very cheap insurance and something that needs replacing anyway. Remember oil touching hot enough components will catch fire.

Haven't really driven lately, but I took the car to the shop today. The driver side was leaking oil pretty rapidly, my mechanic seemed to think it was the gaskets as well but hopefully I wont get a call tomorrow telling me something else is cracked...

Picking it up tomorrow so i'll post what it turned out to be.

Shop replaced the valve cover gaskets, plenum gasket, and another unspecific gasket. 600$ and 3 days later, no more burning smell

Spoke too soon. Noticed a couple drops of oil on the garage floor today... car is still leaking oil...
Calling the shop back on monday since I paid 600$ for them to not even fix the problem.

Ideas?

Since you're actually noticing drops on the ground, put down some clean paper under the car next time you're parked for an extended period of time. Before you move the car, inspect where the drops are on the paper and make note of what part(s) it is dripping from. Get under the car and follow the dripping oil back to the source.

During all this time, continue to check the oil very frequently. If it's leaking at a very slow rate, it may not be that big of an issue for a while, as long as you keep it topped off. I believe there are additives you can place into the engine oil that will fluoresce under UV light, so you can use a UV light to check for leaking oil even if it's not obvious to a naked eye. If the engine bay has a good layer of filth that makes it difficult to see the oil leak, you could also start with a good degreaser and cleaning so that active oil leaks will be that much more obvious.

Good luck, and keep us updated.

First of all the guy overcharged you through the roof for changing 3 gaskets. It's something you could've done on your own and the parts would cost $50 tops

Second, this might mean a leak somewhere (unknown until you do what marlin suggested) or it can mean leaky valve covers. Check around the valve covers... do you notice any oil?

Best bet would be to just leave paper under the car and figure out the location of leak.

best thing to do is to climb under your car and clean it as good as you can - clumb back under after driving and letting it sit for a little while and see where the leak is coming from.
