piston rings?

So i have been trying to find out if any body has replaced there piston rings on a 03 6mt coupe i have been having some really bad OC issues lately. i know that the rings may not be the issue but at over 100k on the car it couldnt hurt do change them. so basically my question is has anybody ever changed them and is it worth my time and money? Or should i just start looking for a new engine?

Thanks

Whats wrong with the motor to make you want to tear it all apart to change the rings?

I have been going through alot of oil lately ive gotten to the point now that i keep oil in my trunk and i check atleast once a day. It has been real hit or miss one day it was so low it wasnt even on the dipstick so its not exactly a consistent issue. But it has to be leaking some where internely and im assuming that its getting burned up and thats why im loosing oil but have no leaks. i have no oil leaks any where in the engine bay or under my car and my exhoust isnt black at all. So I was thinking with the high miles on the engine it couldnt hurt to replace the rings. I just dont know if that is going to solve my problem. Doing the work is not a problem for me im a mechanic I just dont wanna waste my time on rings if its gonna be more worth while to just replace the engine. The only reason im jumping to replacing the engine is because ive read several other threads of people having to do so.

I'm still new to these engines. But from what i have read, people that have had the engine replaced under warranty still consume oil after 10-30k miles. So the problem starts all over again. (This is my opinion only) ----> I'd say if you know what the problem is and since your a mechanic and know how to do everything, you should rebuild it but i'd look at the valves too to see if it loosing oil that way too.

By the time you tear the engine down re-ring it, re-assemble it and put it back in you will have wished you bought a used engine.

If you do the rings you should also should have the cylinders honed so the new rings seat, also rings are not a direct drop in you have to file fit them so if you don't know what you are doing I dont recommend doing it yourself.

So I've been doing some more research and considering the pros and cons of a rebuild and engine replacement and im pretty torn on what to do. It's not gonna be a cheap process either way and im not sure if its worth the money to invest.because of the fact that I'm currently living in germany getting a new engine will not be easy plus it will be expensive especially if i have to ship from the states and if i go to the rebuild way between the cost of the kit and being with out a car while doing the work im unsure if it will really be worth it at the end of the day. So now im also considering selling the car and upgrading to possibly a newer G if i can find one over here in germany and hopefully having less issues. So I appreciate everyones input i have some thinking to do before i make a decision. I would hate to sell my car but im thnking it may be my best bet at this point.

thanks let me know what you think
