Intermittant tries to start then stalls

’04 G35X AT 110,000 miles, stock, well maintained, no oil consumption, smooth idle, MPG unchanged. Occasionally tries to start then stalls. Giving a little gas on start and holding briefly is the band aid. Happens when can has been standing for days or operated within the last few minutes. Dealer had car several times including overnights. First attempt was to clean the throttle body and ECU reset. No change. Dealer has seen it happen but says it is too brief to get any readouts. Dealer’s fix was to change the startup "profile" (my word not theirs). It now revs higher on startup and comes down more slowly to full warm idle speed than original. It no longer has problem but I feel dealer may have addressed a symptom not a cause. My concern is that the cause may eventually bite me and I don’t know if the new profile may result in creating a new issue. Any thoughts appreciated. Thank You.

In this case - the cause may have yet to rear its head enough to diagnose properly and so the bandaid fix the dealer did is good enough to get you by for now.

Those who have startup issues generally start with:
Battery & Alternator check
Starter motor check
Tune up (spark plugs)
Check the ignition coils
Cam phase(position) sensors

Seems like there are a lot of people that have starting/stopping issues with the cam sensors although i have yet to experience a problem with this yet and I have 180K on the clock now.

I just changed my starter motor about 5k miles ago, but other than that no starting issues to date.

Thanks tolboothwilley, I'll have them all checked. The battery and plugs have less than 40k miles. Everything seems to sound and function as expected except when it dosen't start. It seems it wants to start every time and if I just give a little gas it does start every time that is why the dealer's band aid has been getting me by. My concern is that I don't want to have to call a tow truck if a little preventive maintenance will correct the cause.

Yeah, it shouldn't "struggle" to start. I highly doubt battery is the issue here...but you can go to checker/O'reily, autozone...they will test for free so you might as well rule them out.

It is also possible that your problem is fuel related...but its smart to rule out all the easy stuff first...then cheap stuff..

Good luck. Post your findings.

I have the exact same issue on my 08 sedan, with 96k on the clock. Very random, ill push the starter and it will start for half a second and stall. If i push the pedal and start again, it will start and be fine for a month or so. It has done this for over a year. Anyone successful in solving this?

This happened to me in my 05 sedan. Turned out the battery was just about at the end of its rope.
