Engine change in driveway
Engine change in driveway
I have a Vortech SC 03 G35 and I'm going to do an engine change with an engine from IPP. Has anyone successfully changed out their engine without the use of a vehicle lift? Apparently you need to drop the transmission and engine together from the bottom of the car and thats not possible in my driveway. I have done many diesel engine changes where I work but those applications are not cars; although, I am a skilled mechanic and I'm familiar with engine changes. The only way I can see it working is by taking off my SC, radiator, front bumper, and everything else on the front so I can have clearance to move the engine away from the transmission. Sounds possible with a cherry picker/engine hoist but I'm asking if anyone has done it before and if you have any advice. Thank you.
I have removed/installed engine/trans twice in my G and once in a 350z(CUX350z/CUXtopher) without a lift.
Your right about removing front end/bumper/radiator/condeser/radiator support.
Recommend having AC system evacuated to completely remove condenser, it becomes a hindrance.

My local mechanic (who doesn't have a shop and works out of his driveway) swapped my engine and he did exactly what you said. Removed the entire front end and used a hoist to do the swap.
Its easier than it seems. Removing the front is just a simple jigsaw puzzle. Remember the order when taking the parts out (label and # would be nice) and reverse the order when putting everything back on

You know what would be awesome.
If one of you can be kind enough to document and photograph all your work and post a engine swap DIY for the rest of the forum members.
I bet you would get major props and your e-rep would reach unprecedented heights.

So it seems the only issue anyone has brought up that I need to be ready for is the condenser. Another thing I need to do is time my new engine. I have to swap my vtc gears and buy all new timing components for my new engine and put it at top dead center and ensure the cams are in the correct position before I put the chains on. Hoping that doesn't give me to much of a hassle.
Carefully study factory service manual illustrations and you should have no issues.
Timing components are marked and easy to align.
Only problem in my build was Brian Crower cams have 1 extra locator pin that was easily removed.

I have done several swaps through the front and I have never had to touch the AC condenser. Just discharge the AC and unhook the two lines by the rad remove the entire front as one part with the rad/fans/condenser as one unit. One thing you might want is to put the car on jack stands, it gives you more room to work if you put the engine and trans in at the same time. I personally find it easier to install them together.
