First Automatic Transmission Fluid Change at 90k
First Automatic Transmission Fluid Change at 90k
Hello fellow G owners,
I know this topic has been raised many times but there were very little threads for cars with high mileage like mine.
I have enough of ATF fluid to drain and fill all 11-12quarts but still have some back thoughts ...
I'd like hear from people who drained and filled all the liquid at approx the same mileage and how the transmission felt after it or from those who chose not to and drained only half or so.
Thanks

Might of been a bad idea to do a full flush like that if it's your first.. especially at that high of a mileage. Would of just stuck to changing out like 4 quarts or so then wait another idk.. 15k or 20k miles or so then change out another 4 quarts.
I have 94k on my 03 5AT and was wondering the same thing. Everything seems to work fine but I heard ppl have problems once they change the fluids out. To flush or not to flush, that is the question.
New G35 owner here in the exact same situation. Mine's at 90,000 kms and I'm planning to go for the car's first ever ATF change this Saturday.
I stumbled upon this thread and just wondering why it would be so bad to do a full change?

If you don't drain and replace 4 quarts of transmission fluid that often then doing a flush will definitely be a problem. Someone posted something about this awhile back..
They said that the transmission fluid gets dirty with small pieces of metal/sludge that build up over time and those pieces end up sticking to the gears and eventually get used as "grip" if not changed often. So if you haven't drained your transmission fluid at all for I guess around 50k+ miles then doing a flush would be horrible because you'd lose all those metal pieces and there would be no "grip" and it would cause the transmission to slip and you'll end up having to get a new transmission.
It's really late and im tired and it sounds retarded the way I explained it, but it works.

Nissan/Infiniti's official stance on transmission flush vs. drain is DO NOT FLUSH, which came out as a bulletin in 2007 (Reference NPSB/07-027; #9376 page 3). A drain is preferred, but there are also some recommendations that dropping the pan and thoroughly cleaning it and the screen are the best way to do it. Some folks drain and fill every oil change for 3 oil changes (at the designated time), this ensures that at least 90% of your fluid will be "new" within by the 3rd regular oil change (I change mine every 7.5K using Castrol Edge or Pennzoil Platinum Ultra).
According to the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association, 90% of ALL transmission failures are caused by overheating. And most of these can be blamed on worn out fluid that should have been replaced. Not on lose metal parts floating in the system following a flush/drain.
Just my .02

Good Information....^....but sad to see that you change oil every 7500 miles. Using the best synthetic oil it only cost $60 including quality filters, that's cheap insurance to keep your engine happy and clean....Gary
Changing your oil every 7.5k with Castrol Edge or Pennzoil Platinum Ultra should be fine though.
$60 is a high price to pay. Usually it's like $30-$35 for a box of Castrol Edge or sometimes even German Castrol then the filter is another $10 max for a quality one like M1 or Bosch or K&N

Thats a lot of miles to go without changing the fluid. Don't half-@ss the maintenance and replace all of the oil, you probably won't feel a difference but you will help the transmission last longer.

Prinny or Gary C--- is there any qualitative difference between K&N, Purolator 1, MI or other higher end filters? Some Amsoil folks laugh when you ask this question.
Sorry about hijacking your thread OP.
I have over 153k miles on my 04 sedan. Ive been doing a drain and fill (diff, tranny, coolant) every 30k since I got the car at 33k. I change the oil at about 4700 miles with castrol syntec and OEM filter, but on my next oil change i will be using napa gold oil filter. So far my car is running fine, never had any major issues.
