Piston compression question.
Why would you want to go to a lower compression piston? I imagine that it has something to do with protecting the engine for forced induction applications, but can someone clarify for me?
Under boost, the lower compression piston is less prone to detonation (preignition). It also allows you to run a lower octane for the same boost level, if desired (keeping it a pump-gas motor, for example).

Boost makes more power then compression. To simplify things when you 'boost' a motor you are effectively raising the compression ratio. If the compression ratio is high already you will run into issues because your over all compression will be higher then your fuel can maintain.
If you lower your compression you can raise your boost. low compression + high boost will make more power then high compression + low boost.

dont forget to add that when you lower compression it will affect spool up and hp per psi
a higher compression motor will make more hp per psi than a low compression one
Yes, I guess I just assumed that people knew that the higher your compression ratio the more HP you will make! Sorry for leaving that out. I work in NW Indy!
