Question re modifications
I've been following the threads here with some interest. My knowledge of what the different components do is quite limited, but I can't seem to find any good, basic guide or explanation. Does anyone know of a good online resource that explains all this?

Okay, well, then I'll just go ahead with some questions:
1. The filter - how much of a performance improvement is there?
2. What's does the header do? I'm guessing it's the pipe that leads to the actual exhaust, but that's just a guess.
3. This site (http://autorepair.about.com/library/.../bldef-785.htm) notes that test pipes are illegal, I'm guessing for emissions reasons. If I'm using my G as a commuter vehicle, and don't want to have to swap out every time I get a smog check, there hardly seems to be a point to it. Or am I missing something?
4. All of the modifications mentioned above relate to airflow. I found a decent flywheel explanation at http://www.mazdatrix.com/f-writng.htm, but I'm curious as to what other types of modifications can be done.
5. I saw some references to the G35 having an adaptive ECU. Does that mean that no ECU tinkering is necessary to account for various modifications that are put in? Does that also mean that there's no point in swapping out the ECU in the G35?
6. In general, how "modification-friendly" is the G35?

2. Headers carry exhaust away from engine block. See above.
3. Yes they are non smog-compliant, but slow the exhaust gases coming out. See above.
4. A lighter flywheel feels nice, wait until your clutch needs replacement.
