I just checked the retail site for the Series 2000 5W-30 and it is $5.85/qt. Where are you seeing $8.00/qt.? Can you show me a link?

As far as I can tell, they don't make a Series 2000 5W-30, they make an XL-7500 5W-30 for $5.20/qt, and a Series 2000 0W-30 for $8.35/qt.

www.amsoil.com, Online Store, Enter Store, Synthetic Motor Oils -- the prices I'm referring to are in the top 4 links on that page. Here's a direct link to the expensive one: Series 2000 0W-30

Re: Amsoil vs Mobil 1

I'm sorry... my bad. What you want to use is the SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil. I don't know what I was thinking by saying Series 2000.

Re: Amsoil vs Mobil 1

Yeah, I wouldn't be using the Series 2000 anyway.. that stuff is suppposed to be good for 35k miles or 1 year. The XL-7500 is 25k miles or 1 year. It's the 1 year part that gets me. As a consumer, I drive my vehicle 12k-15k miles a year. So the extended-drain cost-savings argument goes out the window. Plus, the Series 2000 doesn't meet the API certification, and whatever their arguments may be to the contrary, I definately won't be using anything that isn't API certified during the warranty period. I hear you can occassionally find 5qt jugs of Mobil 1 at WalMart on sale.. that may be the way to go, find the sales and stock up.

I'm trying to walk the line between cost savings and being good to the engine. So, if it isn't significantly better than dino every 3k, I'm not going to pay much extra for it.

Say, I hear a lot about oil analysis. What about the filter? How do you determine if a filter has any life left, or if it's clogged and the bypass valve is always open?

Re: Amsoil vs Mobil 1

I thought XL-7500 (which is a semi-synthetic) is 7500 miles oil change interval

Filter...is a crap shot. You don't really know. You try to replace it hopefully before it clogs.
