Weird Oil Consumption

Hi,

First off, I have seen the oil consumption threads and since I do not have a revup engine, they shouldn't apply.

I have been noticing some significant oil consumption this summer. It seems to occur mainly on long road trips.

My wife drove my G to Oregon and back a couple months ago (about 2000 miles round trip), and when she got back the oil level was below the "normal" range. I ended up adding about two quarts to bring it to the top of the full range. I don't know where it was before she left, but it would have been somewhere in the normal range.

Since then I have started tracking it. After 3 weeks and 500 miles since I did my last oil change, I have consumed zero oil (based on the dipstick).

Now, yesterday we drove to Oregon again (950 miles) and the oil level is now down to 1/3 of the normal range. I'm assuming this is about 2/3 of a quart of oil lost in just one day.

Any ideas or reasons on why this could be? This seems like a lot, and if I didn't know to check it I would end up below the safe range again if I didn't add oil. I have never had a car consume oil quite this badly, and the fact it happens on a road trip and not in normal driving is weird to me.
