Overheating problem
Overheating problem
Hi all,
I still driving my 2004 G35 Coupe Sport that I got 12 years ago. I put it in storage for 2 years. Now this summer I got the plate on it and it started to have a overheating issue.
It only has 70k km on it. I rarely drive.
I flushed the coolant and bled as much as I can. I open up the bleed plug at the back and pour coolant there just to make sure there's no air in that hose.
I just the Torque App and my OBDII connector and found out the operating temperture goes from 109 - 116 celcius. The gauge would go all the way up to the top just before the "H".
It got better after I drain and fill the coolant. The car can now driving for 30 mins before it overheat versus before it overheated after 10 mins.
Does anyone knows what is the normal operating temperature of the coolant?
TIA

Not sure if this applies to you, but my 05 used to overheat. When I brought it to the dealer I was told that Infiniti would replace the radiator for free because of a known problem with the radiators. This was maybe 5 years ago. I don't remember if this was simply a warranty extension, so I'm not sure if you've missed the time window.
Thanks for the info bud. The stealship here in my area are the worst. (Richmond, BC, Canada) Remember our 1st gen coupe has a problem with the wimpy brake disc that Nissan suppose to change them out for free. My brake discs were worn out within a year and they refused to change it for me even I only had the car for 1 year. They asked me to pay $800 so I just change out the disc/pads myself for under $200..
I guess I am out of luck if I need to go to the dealership after 12 years.
Any other suggestion I can try?
Any known problem with our thermostat not opening up? or water pump premature failure?
Or everyone else thinks it's the radiator?
I just hope it's not the head gasket as it will cost me $$$ as I was told by my mechanic since they have to tear out the V6 to work on it.
I went to a gas station call USA gasoline and did a fillup of 92 octane, The overheating problem arise after. Could it be the gas being the culprit?

No, you have to go rent a cooling system pressure tester (free with deposit from most parts stores).
Any shop could pressure test your coolant system for you which should locate the issue you're having with over heating. Just because you replaced the radiator fluid doesn't mean it isn't clogged if you haven't replaced fluid frequently, especially after not driving it for two years! Looks like you found out about the stealerships, find an independent shop for your service...Gary

You can try taking the thermostat out and stick it in some boiling water to verify it works.
If you goto AutoZone rent one of their block testers it's like 30 bucks. You siphon out some coolant and plug this thing on top. Then you siphon in some gas into a liquid and if it changes color then your head gasket is leaking exhaust gases.
Rent a pressure tester also and pump it to about 15 PSI if I remember correctly. It should hold pretty steady if not you have a leak.
My radiator had a small leak, so I replaced that last year. How's your coolant level?
Try bypassing the heater core also to rule out if that's plugged up.
Cooling fans turn on?
It usually takes me about an hour or two to get all air out of the system. Are you sure there is no more air in your system?
Thanks all for their valuable opinions.
It turns out I had a crack in my thermostat. I was half way into taking it out but my back hurt so bad due to sport injuries, and I broke one of the hose clips, so I couldn't finish the job. I gave it to my mechanic and he charged me $150 for part and labor. Hope that's a fair price.
He said he rarely see this happens to our cars at this age and milage.
Hope this helps others in the future.
BTW, our coolant runs from 84 -92 celcius operating temp.
