Is it not too low if it hangs beneath the rearview mirror? I was imagining it hanging next to or even slightly above the rearview?

I'm thinking of trying to hardwire (again, depends on how complicated it is) since I would much rather have everything hidden.

Well hanging low doesn't really get in the way. In fact, I think its in plain site of the open road ahead of you and if you mount it way to the top, you can get some interference with the tint thats possibly up there.
