Need help asap!!
I need some help ASAP! The timing chain or a tensioner is starting to go out. My 2005 G35 Rev up coupe is starting to make grinding noises in cold starts, and also when I rev my car or drive it around 2k-3k, a noise is coming from that part of the engine. So I wanted to see if anyone here did a timing chain on VQ35DE Rev Up. If someone did, please comment and let me know the steps to change it. I have limited time to do this or else I am going to have to pay a lot of money to get it done by a shop. Also, I know I have to remove the lower oil pan, but do I have to do the upper as well? I have seen some videos that this job can be done without taking the engine out. Can someone please confirm that? Thank you. PM me or post, please let me know asap. It also has about 145k miles.

I replaced my timing chain on my 06 5AT I don't imagine the procedure is much different. The upper oil pan can stay on and you only take the lower off, because there is two hidden bolts. Pop off the left black cover and see if the tensioner is all the way extended. If it is odds are the guide rail broke and thats the source if the noise. If it's still intact you might be abke to just replace the tensioner.

This one has some good info on how it all works and what to look for when doing the job to make it go as smoothly as possible. This is not replacing the chain or guides though. Do what others said and check the left access panel to see the condition of the tensioner mechanism.
Good luck, wouldn't try to do it all in one night or something. Maybe a weekend though. I'd take the front clip off too by the way, it would probably save time in the end.
If you listen at 4:50-4:55 where he talks about the engine popping and rotating during the water pump job he's absolutely correct. That's what happened to me when I went to do my water pump on my G and ended up having to take it all apart.
It didn't take much either when I was doing it, I barely rotated it when I was trying to get some slack to get the pump out and it popped.

It could also just be your water pump bearings going out or another bearing noise. I took my belts off and revved my car in the driveway to isolate everything except the actual engine itself.
But, if this is your DD prepare for at least two days or more. Nissan will charge you ay least 1K to do this. I took my radiator out also for more room and replaced it as well, since it had a crack. But, I did it all in my garage on jack stands, my back, ans mostly leaning over with the engine still in.
They do sell a crank locking tool that goes where the start mounts. If you can buy that or find some other device to hold the crank in place, I think you can avoid my problem.

Hey I'm new to the forum, wasn't sure if I should start new thread or not. Anyways, it sounds like I'm having the same problem and was hoping someone could help me confirm. Noise starts at 0:28 in this video... Any help or advice is appreciated... Thanks
Edit: Noise usually happens around 2-3k RPM, when engine is cold (usually goes away or substantially subdues when warm) or going up hill. Noise recorded in video is when I'm going up a hill

Ohh that doesn't sound good at all, too hard to tell from all the audio drone but I strongly recommend taking it to a mechanic to have a stethoscope put on it though.
