Horsepower Vs. Torque

here is a nice question for you guys,

When does maximum acceleration occur, peak torque or peak horsepower? ( i just want to see what you guys have to say, because i have seen many misconceptions about horsepower and torque)

(hint: torque can be multiplied and divided with gearing)

Re: Horsepower Vs. Torque

A car will accelerate hardest in any given gear when at it's peak torque.

Re: Horsepower Vs. Torque

Acceleration = torque
Max Speed = HP

Or at least, that is what I generally have understood to be true

Re: Horsepower Vs. Torque

sorry gentlemen, its horsepower you want.

here's a link that explains it. http://www.johnsonenginetechnology.c...uns/howto.html

torque is a powerlifter, horsepower is a sprinter.

think of this way, a farm tractor has huge torque but I think a Yugo will still beat it in a quarter mile.

Re: Horsepower Vs. Torque

Cars maximum acceleratetion occurs in any given gear when at it's peak torque to the wheels.

Re: Horsepower Vs. Torque

yes, you guys are correct. Peak acceleration is at peak torque in any gear.

Say you have a water wheel running a mill, its running at a very low rpm however it produces 6000ft-lbs of torque.

If you wanted to gear it down to run a car at 80mph it would only have 12ft lbs or so.

Gearing is very critical in this aspect.

Horsepower is the point at which it theoretically could be geared down to produce the most torque.

However, with conventional gears, the peak torque in any gear will produce the maximum acceleration.

This is the reason the honda S2000 can only have 111ft-lbs and run low 14 second 1/4's because the torque has been geared down and multipllied and takes advantage of the fact that the torque peak occurs in the 7000 rpm range.

Re: Horsepower Vs. Torque

DanO: I read that article somewhere with the waterwheel example.

The main point it was making was: "It is better to make torque at high rpms rather than low rpms because you can take advantage of gearing."

Don't remember where it was. Do you have the link?

Re: Horsepower Vs. Torque

The following would be a good rule of thumb:
torque = work (this is what drags your 80,000 lb truck up the hill)
hp = speed (obviously this is your go fast)

Or we could simply go to page 204 in our Edelbrock catalog to get any forumla we wanted to know about but were afraid to ask :-)
